Winter Teen Skincare Must-Haves

We’re welcoming winter in New York soon and with that comes dry skin. My daughters are switching up their skincare routine to make sure they have the right products to take on the colder months! There are tons of skin care products on the market and it can feel overwhelming when it comes to choosing the right options for your skin type. Seasons change, there are hormonal changes especially in teens and living a healthy lifestyle sometimes isn’t the only thing we need to do to take care of our skin. Moreover, creating a skin-care routine you can stick to and a healthy balanced diet are essential for the skin of your dreams.

I’ll break down how we go about finding new products and give you a list for your teens and tweens to try out!

Skin Type

Knowing your type of skin is the first step to figuring out your skin care routine. The teenage years can be tougher on young skin due to excess oil production and hormonal inbalances. The skin types are dry skin, oily, sensitive and combination. Plenty of beauty products are on the market that target each skin concern and it’s even better if you can find board-certified dermatologist approved options. One thing to note, skin care is not just for your face! Body lotion and taking care of our skin everywhere is important, as well.

Weather Changes

Cold weather is already here and that can dry all of us out. Water loss is something we don’t want to have to worry about, so not only is moisturizing important in products, but we need to be drinking enough water throughout the day, as well. The secret to youthful skin is taking care of ourselves inside and out. Just because it’s cold, it doesn’t mean the sun isn’t out! Sun protection is still a necessity, so wear sunscreen daily! You can even find a daily moisturizer that has SPF in it.

Do’s and Don’ts

First thing, we need to shop for our skin type. For example, if you have acne-prone skin or sensitive skin, you don’t want products that contain essential oils. Those will irritate your skin even more and cause it to inflame. For example, hyaluronic acid is great for dry skin and mattifying products that are oil free work well for oily skin. We all need to be wearing moisturizer, especially in the winter months. Keeping the natural oils balanced on our skin can feel like a tricky game, but trial and error is welcome. That’s how we figure out what works best for us! The basics we need are face wash, toner, moisturizer and chapstick. Start there and then you can add the fancy stuff in!

Let me know what products your teens are loving lately!

Firstly, my girls love Drunk Elephant! The products feel super luxurious while having fun and attainable items.
We love Summer Fridays in this house! This product keeps your lips moisturized while providing a subtle hint of color.
This is an essential every day item! We need to be teaching our kids to put sunscreen on first thing in the morning! This one is not greasy and feels great on top of skincare.
Who is looking for holiday gift sets? I love skincare tools, I think they’re great for targeting things like puffiness and they feel amazing! This is the perfect set to try out if you’re newer to skincare.
Cleansing balms are great for getting off makeup and just cleansing the skin of dirt and excess oil from the day. This brand is incredibly affordable and this product specifically is great for more sensitive skin.
My girls love face masks! This actually makes a great stocking stuffer for the holidays and is full of different masks to try out.
Another brand my girls have been loving is Glossier! They’re great for a natural look and for people just starting out with skincare and makeup. This set also is perfect for the holidays!
Think of this as more of a toner. For example, it’s perfect for acne and especially mascne! You can spray it a couple times a day to calm your skin.
I’ve heard amazing things about this brand! For instance, this is a great set to try out if you’re new to them and they’re small enough to travel with!
This is another very up and coming skincare brand. Specifically, another great holiday gift idea and perfect set to try out!
Tula is a brand I use a lot of! Particularly, I love that they have different levels of skincare to target acne, which is normally hormonal in teens.
Now this is a miracle in a jar! If you suffer from redness, this will take it away! It’s skincare that changes to the color of your skin to not just cover the redness, but soothe the skin.
Exfoliation is important! Furthermore, if you have Keratosis Pilaris– the red bumps on the back of your arms, this is the product for you!
It’s always great to start incorporating serums and learning more about your skin. Moreover, this vitamin C is one of the best!
Peptides are great to incorporate into your skincare! Finally, they do a lot of your skin and your skin’s barrier. This brand is one of the best around and this facial cream is so luxurious!

  1. I’ve always wanted to try Drunk Elephant. After seeing this article I think it would also be a great gift for my teenage nieces.

  2. It’s good to get kids into skin care as soon as possible. Or any self-care for that matter! Great share and will give someone out there some good ideas for Christmas presents!

  3. These products look amazing. Im already begining to feel the effect of the weather on my skin, and I’m even thinking of switching up my own skincare routine as well.

  4. The teen years are tougher on the skin — you can say that again! Our eldest battled acne and we had to bring him to the Dermatologist and had him treated. Thank God she was a good one and was able to prescribe products and meds that completely eliminated the acne. I’ll check if we have super goop! brand of sunscreen here.

  5. Skin care alone is something to really take seriously. It is a great way to start teaching teens to use them. Great products to definitely keep note of.

  6. I totally agree with you that we need to determine our skin type and shop one according to what we need. After all, there is no one size fits all in skincare. Thank you for the product recommendations. Will check them out.
