I feel like I say this every single year, but truly, where did summer go? One minute we’re settling into slow mornings and beach days, and the next we’re staring down supply lists, new schedules, and the start of another school year. As much as I love summer, there’s something about this season that always pushes me into reset mode. We’re getting organized, setting routines, and preparing our family for a smoother transition back into busy days.
Over the years, I’ve learned that back-to-school success isn’t about having everything perfectly figured out, it’s about creating simple systems that actually work for your family. Between school season supplies, activities, and constantly changing schedules, it can feel overwhelming. But having a plan in place makes all the difference. These are the habits and routines I come back to every year to help us feel a little more grounded going into that first week. School shopping has officially begun and this is a great way to prep for a smooth transition from summer to the upcoming school year.
1. Start with a Plan
As soon as we get school calendars, Jason and I sit down and map everything out. Mostly important dates, activities, travel, and even potential conflicts. Having a large visual calendar at home plus a shared digital calendar keeps us aligned and avoids last-minute chaos. I also use this time to schedule doctor, dental, and other appointments so we’re not scrambling mid-semester. That initial planning conversation honestly sets the tone for the entire season. For us, a school guide or full school routine is essential.
2. Reset Your Routines
A few weeks before school starts, we slowly ease back into our routines. This means earlier bedtimes, more structured mornings, and a general rhythm that mirrors the school schedule. It’s not always perfect, but consistency really helps my kids feel more balanced and prepared. One small thing that makes a huge difference: laying out outfits the night before. It sounds simple, but it eliminates so much morning stress. A morning routine sets the tone for each day and a successful school year for any grade level. This time of year, there’s early wake-up times that we aren’t used to from the summer, but a positive attitude goes far. Resetting our routine starts us out on the right foot with new routines for school days. The right preparation starts with good bedtime routines.
I also try to prioritize my own routine during this time. I start waking up a bit earlier, having a quiet moment with coffee, and getting a head start on the day before the chaos begins. Even a little structure for myself makes the mornings feel more manageable.
3. Be Mindful of Allergies & Classroom Needs
Every classroom is different, and being aware of allergies is so important. I always connect with teachers early on and keep a quick reference note in the kitchen when packing lunches or snacks. It’s a small step that gives me peace of mind and helps keep everyone safe, especially during those first few busy weeks.
4. Plan Easy Meals & Lunches Ahead
Back-to-school always sneaks up on me when it comes to meals, so I try to get ahead by saving a few go-to lunch ideas and easy dinners. Testing out recipes before school starts helps me know what the kids will actually eat. Some weeks are more organized than others, but even having a few prepped meals or freezer options makes busy nights feel less overwhelming.
At the end of the day, going back to school is a big transition, for kids and for us. There’s excitement, nerves, and a lot of moving pieces, but there’s also something really special about a fresh start. I love watching my kids step into a new year, grow more confident, and settle into their routines again.
And of course, don’t forget the first day of school photo, it’s the one tradition I’ll never skip. New clothes and new backpacks for the beginning of the school year photo.
5. Plan Extracurriculars Out
Planning out what the kids would like to do for extracurricular activities actually saves us so much time and we can then plan around them. There’s a lot of running around, like an after school rush. This school transition goes way smoother when we have our afternoons planned out and can plan homework and downtime around after-school care and activities. The start of the school year can feel a bit overwhelming and as the new school year approaches, we are taking a deep breath and jumping into our new daily schedule!
