Can you even believe we’re already talking about back-to-school again? It feels like we just wrapped up the last school year, and now here we are. Shopping for supplies, refreshing routines, and getting everyone ready for a new start. Having my kids all be teens still feels surreal to me, and their needs have definitely evolved over the years, especially when it comes to backpacks and lunchboxes. It really feels like elementary school was just yesterday but we are looking forward to the new school season.
School backpacks are no longer just about carrying a few notebooks and school supplies. They need to handle laptops, sports gear, water bottles, and everything in between. These are everyday essentials that really need to hold up, so finding the right one is worth the time.
Spacious Compartments
As kids get older, organization becomes everything. A good backpack should have a large main compartment for books and binders, plus a padded sleeve for a laptop or tablet. I always recommend looking for a streamlined design. One main compartment with a smaller front pocket tends to maximize space without things getting lost. And don’t forget exterior pockets for easy access to water bottles or quick-grab items. For school bags, whether it be the best backpack or tote bag, it’s nice to have compartments that have space for everything they need. Especially a padded laptop sleeve for the new school year or a spot to put lunchboxes so they don’t have to carry them separately. With after school activities, we love water bottle pockets for easy access too.
Built-In Organization
We’re big on organization in our house, and the right backpack can make a huge difference. Features like interior dividers, pencil holders, and secure zip pockets help keep everything in its place and make mornings a little less chaotic. Durability matters too. Look for materials that can handle daily wear and a little weather, especially if your kids are constantly on the go between school and activities. Every kid has different school essentials, event college students need durable backpacks with built in organization and just the right size to fit everything.
Personal Style
At the end of the day, this is something your kids are using every single day, so it has to be something they actually like. Whether it’s a classic style, something sporty, or a fun color or print, letting them choose makes all the difference. Brands like JanSport have stood the test of time for a reason, but there are so many great options now that combine both style and function. There are a variety of colors and patterns for kids backpacks these days, which is amazing. But with more options, comes a more difficult time choosing.
Especially for a high schooler who wants maybe more of a cool backpack than an elementary school option that might not have different organization or large compartment options. The perfect backpack is one that fits all of your kids needs and is made of durable materials. If you need to replace your backpack from the previous school year, pay attention to thoughtful features because it really makes a difference in book bags, especially for heavy loads with books. A quality backpack is a game changer.
Don’t Forget the Lunchbox
Lunchboxes have come a long way, and finding one that fits your child’s routine is just as important. For younger kids, I love structured bento-style boxes that keep everything separated and easy to eat. For older kids, insulated lunch bags with enough room for snacks, drinks, and longer days are key. Bonus points for ones that are easy to clean and actually keep food cold until lunchtime.
Back-to-school shopping can feel overwhelming, but I always try to focus on pieces that will truly make everyday life easier. A great backpack and a functional lunchbox go a long way in helping kids feel prepared and organized and honestly, that sets the tone for the entire year.
And just like everything else with parenting, what works one year might change the next and that’s all part of it.
