We’re officially in back-to-school mode, and somehow it only gets more complicated as the kids get older. Between two high schoolers and one middle schooler, we’re juggling different supply lists, dress codes, and activity needs, so staying organized is everything this time of year. Instead of scrambling last minute, we like to get ahead and build one master list that covers it all.
General Supplies
School supplies are always the first priority. No matter the age, every new school year calls for a fresh set of essentials. Think backpacks, notebooks, writing tools, and a reliable water bottle. Before shopping, we always take inventory of what we already have from last year and then fill in the gaps, especially for things like art supplies, organizational tools, and any extras needed for extracurriculars. Value packs are especially helpful here, they make it easy to stock up without overthinking every item.
Organization
The school supply list sometimes doesn’t include organization items for the new school season. And honestly, that is a massive category because it is what keeps everything together for a successful school year. It’s an exciting time and there is so much going on but if you need assistance with your school supplies list, don’t forget organizing elements. For example, Your kids will need something to hold all of their glue sticks, mechanical pencils, graph paper and various high school supplies for different subjects. The older the kids get, the less general supplies they need and the more organization they need. You can get a few different notebooks for each class or opt for a several subject notebook to keep it all together for the first day of school.
All school districts have different supply lists where they require necessary tools, but for class notes talk to your child and see what their personal preferences are. There’s nothing worse than purchasing everything for the school year and getting a head start only to find out they don’t have what they need for daily use. And I think we all know how stressful back to school shopping list items can get. We suggest getting extra supplies as well because at the end of the semester, they tend to need more! And this is at any grade level, less is less and more is more here.
Extras
And finally, the “extras”, the fun part. These aren’t always necessities, but they help get everyone excited for the new year. For older kids, that might mean a new tech upgrade like a printer or tablet, while younger ones might love fresh art supplies or colorful accessories. Even something small can make a big difference in setting the tone for a positive start to the school year.
This goes beyond what type of calculator or sticky notes they need because those are on a realistic supply list. But high school students need different extra items that elementary school kids might not need. School is tough and if the kids have something they can maybe look forward to using a little bit, it really helps them have something other than look forward to throughout the academic year.
