A new school year always calls for a fresh start and that includes a new pair of shoes. If there’s one thing that never lasts long in our house, it’s kids’ shoes. Between growth spurts and everyday wear, back to school season is the perfect time to find styles that are not only practical. But also something the kids are genuinely excited to wear.
Alongside backpacks, shoe shopping has become one of those small traditions that helps set the tone for the year ahead. And it’s a great way for kids to express their personal style right from day one.

Seasonal
When it comes to choosing the right pair, fit is everything, but not in the way you might think. Instead of buying shoes that fit perfectly in the moment, we always try to plan ahead. Kids’ feet grow quickly, especially during the school year, so opting for a half size up (when it makes sense) can help extend the life of the shoe. It’s a small shift that makes a big difference, especially when you’re investing in quality pairs.
If your kids wear uniforms, this also makes it easier to pass shoes down to younger siblings if they’re still in good condition. One thing we always keep in mind is seasonality. Thicker socks in the fall and winter mean you’ll want a little extra room to keep things comfortable. All day comfort but with school shoes that are a little bit big at the beginning of the school year is at the top of our list for the longs school day.
Breathability
Comfort and breathability are just as important as style. Early fall can still feel like summer, and kids are often wearing their shoes for long stretches, sometimes up to nine hours a day between school and after-school activities. Materials that allow airflow help keep feet cool and supported, while features like cushioning and shock absorption are especially important for younger kids who are constantly on the move. Whether it’s recess, walking between classes, or sports practice, having shoes that can keep up with their day-to-day routines is key.
A lot of people forget about gym class and this is something both big kids and little kids have. Even with school uniforms, you need athletic shoes for gym class! This is something that you honestly don’t need to shop top brands for because these typically last barely a year. Opt for your favorite brands and check out the new arrivals.
Versatility
For older kids and teens, versatility becomes even more important. They want something that looks good but can still function throughout a busy day. While some may lean toward trend-driven styles, we always try to find options that strike a balance between fashion and function. Backless or more relaxed styles can work for teens depending on their schedules, but overall, we look for shoes that can transition easily from the classroom to after-school plans without needing a full outfit change.
My teen girls love to pick out their own perfect pair of shoes. For new kicks, we do what we call fashion sneakers. These have lately been Adidas Sambas. They are kind of like slip-on styles but they have the back to it so they can be everyday essentials. Durable materials that come in a variety of colors, meet school requirements and match with everything are best sellers.
Extra Shoes
Another thing we’ve learned is to think beyond just one pair. At the start of the school year, we typically shop for at least two: an everyday shoe that works with most outfits and a separate pair for gym class or sports that can live in their locker or backpack. This setup makes mornings easier and ensures they’re always prepared, no matter what the day brings. It also helps extend the life of each pair since they’re not being worn for every single activity. My girls also love to pair other shoes with casual outfits so as long as they have their gym shoes handled for school sneakers, they can get a fun pair. Just make sure it’s an all day shoe and not just a popular choice.
Easy to Clean/Weatherproof
Durability and easy maintenance are also high on our list. Machine-washable materials or weather-resistant designs are always a bonus, especially as the seasons shift and conditions become less predictable. From rainy days to playground wear and tear, having shoes that can handle real life makes all the difference. Rain boots are overlooked! You’d be shocked how many shoes have been ruined from the weather that we weren’t able to clean. That waterproof membrane is essential for an active life. Tons of places have back to school sales, so now is the time to look for back to school kids’ shoes of all kinds. A lightweight lifestyle shoe can be a good starting point.
