I had the opportunity of attending the new musical If/Then The Musical last week at the Richard Rogers Theatre with my lovely sister. The play, starring the Tony Award Winner Idina Menzel was wonderful. Idina, the voice of Disney Frozen’s Elsa has been a staple voice in our household since my children were introduced to the movie back in November. I almost felt guilty going to see Idina sans the kids.
The contemporary new musical follows two distinct story lines in the life of Elizabeth, a divorced city planner who moves back to New York to restart her life in this city of infinite possibilities. When her carefully designed plans collide with the whims of fate, Elizabeth’s life splits into two parallel paths. If/Then follows both stories simultaneously as this modern woman faces the intersection of choice and chance.
Idina, who stars as Elizabeth, leads parallel lives as two women; Beth and Liz; whose disparate experiences and opportunities set them on very different courses. The musical goes very back and forth with the fork in the road, and the path she takes. It is a show about choice and chance, career and love, friends and family – all the things women like us deal with every day. I will say pay attention or you will lose which part Idina is playing.
Overall, Idina’s voice was absolutely incredible and makes the entire the musical. My sister and I were blown away by her voice and had the lyrics in our heads days later. You don’t want to miss this performance with iconic Idina Menzel.
