How To Help Texas Winter Storm Victims

As many of you know Texas is in a state of emergency after winter storms have lefts millions without power and resources. Last week Joe Biden issued the state of emergency giving victims access to federal assistance. But the number of people needing food, shelter, and warmth are shocking and there are ways we can help from afar. I’ve listed below easy resources for you to donate. They need all the help they can get right now, so any amount will make a difference. And please if you know of any others that aren’t listed, please leave a comment below with the information!

From international to local organizations here is a list of places where you can donate to help those currently in need of extra support.

The American Red Cross – An international organization that often finds itself on the front lines of natural disasters, war zones, and more. The American Red Cross is currently providing cots and blankets to 35 shelters across the state.

Save The Children – Another international effort that does such great work across the globe. Save The Children is helping child care centers recover so they can continue to care for the children of Texas. They are providing water, hygiene kits, warm clothing, Covid-19 prevention kits, and more.

Lucille’s 1913 Community Kitchen – A local organization in Houston that is currently providing and distributing meals to those in need. In supporting Lucilles 1913’s efforts you are also supporting local vendors and farmers.

Austin’s Pets Alive –  So many pets have died or been misplaced because of these storms. Austin’s Pets Alive is  keeping animals warm and fed during the freezing temperatures. They are currently in need of heat lamps, heating pads, dog beds, heat lamps and monetary donations.

The Other One’s – Born in efforts to help the Downtown Austin homeless population, The Other One’s Foundation has made itself available to those in need during this difficult time. Their most recent efforts include a campsite for over 150 people where they are providing resiliency kits for residents.  The kits include basic needs for those experiencing homelessness.

The Salvation Army – Similar to The American Red Cross, The Salvation Army makes itself available to those in need internationally. They are currently providing food, shelter, and needed items across the state of Texas.

Urgan League – An Austin based foundation that has organized the #LoveThyNeighborTX effort. The campaign raises funds to provide hotel rooms, food, water, and basic needs to those impacted by the storms in the Austin area.

Coalition For The Homeless – These storms have misplaced many families out of their homes and into shelters seeking warmth and food. Coalition For The Homeless is providing warm shelters, beds, and food for those in need in the Houston area and Harris County.

Caritas Of Austin – Caritas Of Austin believes everyone deserves a place to call home. Between the Covid-19 pandemic and now these storms, so many Austin residents are facing housing insecurity. By shopping the Caritas Of Austin Amazon Wishlist you are continuing their efforts in providing a warm place to sleep for those in need.

From basic needs like food, clean water, blankets, warmth, and shelter, all of these organizations are helping in the best ways they can. I hope we can support their efforts during what was an already hard time for many that now has become unimaginable.
