“Winter, spring, summer, or fall…all you have to do is call…” I can remember the first time hearing this song, while sitting in a doctors office with my mom, when I was around six years old. Although not a new song when I was a kid in the 80’s, I remember liking it, and wanting to sing it. During my high school senior year, it was one of the songs we used for our video yearbook.
Last week, my sister and I went to see the Broadway musical, Beautiful. Very familiar with Carole King’s catalog of songs, I have to say, I was intrigued by her story and how she started out. She fought her way into the record business as a teenager, and by her twenties she met the husband of her dreams and developed a flourishing career, writing hits for the biggest acts in rock ‘n’ roll. It wasn’t until her personal life began to crack however that she finally managed to find her true voice.
BEAUTIFUL tells the inspiring true story of King’s rise to stardom, touching on how she was part of a hit songwriting team with her husband Gerry Goffin, her relationship with fellow writers and best friends Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann, and becoming one of the most successful solo acts in popular music history. Along the way, she made more than beautiful music, she penned the soundtrack for a generation.
My sister and I wanted to sing along the entire time. As we walked out of the theatre, we turned to one another and agreed that our mother would love the show, as it featured all the some songs she use to sing when we grew up.
