As we begin back to school shopping, a lot is going through my mind. The kids need clothes, shoes, supplies and snacks and it’s overwhelming. Luckily, we are planning ahead and shopping about a month before school begins. For those that go back to school in August, school deals have already begun. A lot of parents feel the same way where we don’t know where to begin. Basic supplies for the new school year are always a great place to start. Grab your school shopping list and let’s head to the store for hot deals and supplies for the first day of school.
Basic Supplies
Firstly, there are certain supplies that every kid can use. This is in the realm of pencils, notebooks, markers and erasers. Depending on the age of your kids, these will vary. For instance, younger children will need crayons and washable markers while high school students will need sharpies and five subject notebooks. Take a look at prior purchases and see where to begin with the basics. It’s always helpful to ask your kids what they use the most each year, as well. For those first time parents, don’t worry, we all have to start somewhere! Get a backpack and lunchbox and you are pretty much all set for your little one!

Ask Your Teacher for a List
Secondly, this is the most helpful tip if you are stuck on a school supply list. Teachers are happy to help and they can provide you with a list of supplies you might have not even thought of. For example, sticky notes are not something I immediately think of when it comes to school shopping. Another list your teacher can help with is for the classroom versus just your kids. Teachers often have to stock their rooms themselves so I always like to see what I can help provide. Things like hand sanitizer, dry erase markers and tissues can stock the room for the year. Especially those health related items to keep the kids from germs like the sanitizer, tissues and disinfectant wipes. Cold and flu season comes quickly and it stays quite awhile through the year.
Extras
Finally, I don’t know about you but my cart usually gets full with added fun items. Old school supplies are things the kids need and they tend to not be incredibly exciting. If you ever walk through the aisles with clearance items for little extras, those are usually the best sales and the kids get really excited. Locker organization, fun gel pens and cute notebooks are items my kids tend to get excited over. Select school supplies come in a variety of patterns and colors and if you can find any way to make school feel a little bit more exciting, I always say go for it! An easy way to do this is to let your kid pick out one fun thing for personal use for the school year. If they’re on sale, maybe a couple! They get thrilled to use it and have a little special thing they get each school day. Whether it be colorful erasers or sparkle pens, there is always a way to brighten their days.
