Your Guide to Dressing for New Year’s Eve

New Year’s eve is right around the corner! Planning out your new year’s eve outfit and getting ready for the dance floor awaiting the ball drop is a tough task. There are so many different trends going on right now, that it almost makes my head spin. While there are the classic New Year’s looks such as metallic colors, a pop of color or something to match a glass of champagne is always a yes from me. I know there are a ton of winter weddings right now, so if you’re a wedding guest, there are some fun shoe and accessory options here for you, but these are mainly for a bit more low key plans, like an open bar or house party! We’re going to end the holiday season the right way: in fashion!

Color Options

Firstly, there’s no such thing as a dress code for a new year’s eve party. If you’re feeling a vibrant hue, I say speak to that and honor it! Bold colors will always be a party favorite. But silver and gold are a classic NYE statement. A silver heel or metallic sequined minidresses will always be the perfect choice for the night! I’ve seen an all white outfit done before and that’s also incredibly chic. For instance, as the year goes on, the Barbiecore trend seems to live on. So metallic or hot pinks are great for statement pieces.

Material

This is a really interesting category because you can truly never go wrong here. It’s freezing in NYC, so I’d suggest opting for a women wool coat for overtop your NYE outfit. Sequins, silk, satin and rhinestones are all over the place, as they usually are for this fun holiday. But it’s all about doing these materials in the right amount. For example, if I am wearing silk or satin, I like to opt for a statement necklace or rhinestone earrings to complete the look. Although, rhinestone or pearled mesh tops are incredibly on trend at the moment and I really think they look good styled over slip dresses! It’s the last day of the year, so why not go for a fun look? Step outside of your comfort zone and maybe make that a New Year’s resolution!

Price Point

Since this is a big holiday, a lot of people like to splurge on an outfit. We all want to look like the Belle of the ball and you can do that any way you’d like. If you need help making a budget for your look, start with a price point to cap at. Next, think about which piece of the outfit is the most important to you. Is it the shoes? Accessories? Dress? Whichever it is, I’d say you can spend a chunk of your budget on that and then allocate the rest of the budget to the other pieces. Moreover, I’ve found items at all price points to shop from, which is always really exciting!

  1. I’ve never gotten a new outfit for New Year’s Eve, but do always plan it out. Lately, we’ve only had very low-key plans so it wasn’t anything extravagant. I do love the idea of something new to bring in the new year!

  2. How fun that you were on a local magazine cover. That’s great! And I love dressing up for New Year’s — or dressing down and staying at home, too. Ha!

  3. We are far less formal with our New Year’s Eve garb than in the past. We usually stick with a nearby, casual event, often with a theme. This makes it easy to choose something to wear, and often a local thrift shop can supply all we need.

  4. New Year’s Eve is such a fabulous time to get to dress up pretty. I’m staying in this year, but if I weren’t, I would be doing it up to the nines.
