One thing my kids look forward to each new school season is getting a pair of new school shoes. The first day of school is almost like a fashion show to show off your new look for the new school year. New shoes are like a fresh start. These are for everyday wear, so finding a pair of shoes for school and after school activities is quite the hunt. The most important thing is that your kids feel confident in them. I’ve been searching through top brands for lightweight comfort and the latest trends. These are our top picks of the best shoes for the new school season.
We often think of a new school season as a new year in general. It’s the opportunity to refresh our minds and our wardrobes. Donate what we don’t get enough wear out of and make room for the things in our lives that we are excited about. Like Marie Kondo says: if it doesn’t spark joy, we can’t keep it.

Firstly, we have to shop for the most important factor. Our kids are running around and active between gym class and running to class in general. There’s recess and after school activities, too so having athletic shoes the kids are comfortable in are key. Kids’ feet grow quickly, so I always recommend going a half size to a size up in sneakers. My kids personally love Nike, Air Jordan and Adidas for gym shoes. They are not only great to run around in, but they’re also fashion sneakers and can complete an iconic look.

Secondly, this is a broader category. These can absolutely be sneakers but the sky is the limit here. Something our kids will want to put on daily will ultimately be fashionable without sacrificing any comfort. This is how our kids express themselves, too, through personal style. School footwear can include a variety of colors or white shoes. With busy school days, maybe your kids want to separate gym shoes from a timeless look for all day comfort. A few things to think about are air-cushioned soles, breathable upper layer or cozy slip-ons. The whole family can get in on this shopping, too because it is a great excuse to get rid of the shoes we don’t wear and replace them with one’s we do actually wear.

Finally, this is definitely my kids’ favorite category to shop within for shoes. We aren’t always super practical but when they get really excited about a pair of shoes, I can’t help but let them have it. I love watching them express themselves and it’s been amazing as a mom to see their personalities come through in their fashion choices. They get confident in pieces that fit them well and make them feel the most themselves. Maybe they want to use last year’s gym shoes and go for ballet flats or Birkenstock slip ons.
