Spooky season is upon us and with three kids, it’s tough to pick the best Halloween costumes for each of them. They tend to go for their favorite characters for a Halloween party but like to be comfortable and bundled up for trick or treating. Our favorite part about Halloween night is the creativity that goes into the kids’ Halloween costumes. Homemade Halloween costumes always are best, but I find that I don’t have the time to make great costume ideas from scratch. We’re planning ahead and will not be participating in the last minute costume cycle that typically happens this year! Last year, I went as Taylor Swift and it was so much fun. I like to have my kids pick out their own costumes because it’s their holiday. These are our top Halloween costumes of the season!
Characters
Firstly, an easy way to figure out where to start is with your kids’ favorite characters. Darth Vader, the Little Mermaid, Wednesday Addams, Harley Quinn and the witch costumes from Hocus Pocus are classic options. We never get tired of them! It’s a good idea to pick a costume you will want to wear to a few Halloween parties, too. It’s the one day a year we can dress up so why not go all out and win best costume? A few more popular costumes are iconic characters such as Harry Potter, Wonder Woman, Peter Pan, Snow White, Princess Leia from Star Wars, Jurassic World and characters from Stranger Things. Another idea is going as a historical figure or tv characters. A cult favorite is always a good option to go for if you’re ever in a pinch for a perfect Halloween costume! These are also great categories for group costumes or pop culture moments.
Animal
Secondly, when it comes to adorable little baby costumes, dressing them up as animals is too cute for me to skip! This is also something that is easy for DIY Halloween costumes. It can simple be animal heads and solid clothing or a one piece with ears. Moreover, the whole family can enjoy this look! Everyone can be a character from a movie with woodland creatures or animals from a farm. Dogs, a black cat, ducks and bunnies are some classic options. A good Halloween costume is one your kids are comfortable in and little kids are too precious as top picks in the animal costume category. Spirit Halloween typically has some stuff but I shop on the internet for family costume ideas because there are way more options.
School Approved
Finally, most schools have rules for costumes. A lot allow costume parties but it’s important to make sure the costumes are appropriate to actually wear to school. This really applies to the scary Halloween costume concepts mostly. It can feel difficult to come up with a creative costume if you feel restricted, but making sure it’s within the comfort zone is important. No weapons, masks and making sure costumes go along with school guidelines are good rules to follow for this. For a fun-filled Halloween, we do need to make sure we are following the rules. If that means skipping face paint or a popular character and vampire costumes to abide by the school protocols, then we will. And then Halloween night, the kids can wear whichever costume they want!
