While Fall basically just began, I can’t stress enough just how important it is to have a really good winter coat for cold weather. The weather can change in an instant and putting off finding the best winter jackets is not something we want to do. In the city, we get a lot of wind by the water over here and the slush and ice is tough to brave sometimes. A few important things are synthetic insulation, a waterproof shell or outer layer, adjustable hood, and technical features to keep your body heat for the winter months.
Trying to maintain a practical coat closet doesn’t mean we can’t have jackets beyond North Face and puffer jackets. Living in the fashion star of the country, we see a lot of trends come and go, and I think it’s better to go for the trends that are going to last awhile. Especially since not every apartment can fit an entire closet full of just coats! I don’t stray far from my personal style usually, but I do like to go for the best option for the warmest coat. These are the best winter coats to deal with the extreme cold we will be experiencing in a few months.
Daily Wear
Firstly, everyday use is our top priority. With not a ton of closet space in a major city, this has to be the main thing we are looking for in terms of a coat. All the fun stuff can come after this! These styles can range from a simple down jacket to a trench coat that can be dressed up or down. It really depends on your schedule and what you have planned constantly. For instance, I have a ton of activities for the kids, so I like to have a water resistant warm jacket for casual wear in New York City.
Moreover, my favorite coat is a teddy coat that is a long coat. This protects my legs from the colder climate and also is cute for events and meetings. Pay attention to your climate, heavy snow, sub-zero temperatures that could be possible and wet conditions. You know exactly what you need for the season, so I recommend going for the new winter jacket that will see a lot of love and wear from you on a chilly day. The previous winter season had some cold air but no snow really in NYC. Moving forward, we are going to prep for the cooler weather to have options in case we do experience more snow this upcoming season and have the warmest coats to face the day with.
Some Trends I’m Loving:
Sherpa
This has been a top trend for some time now. The coziness and relaxed fit on this style is something I have been reaching for more each year. Not only is this cute, but it is such a warm option for the colder months. I hate to even call it a trend because it’s been around for a little while now and I really think it is here to stay! They make for warm winter coats while still being on trend for the cold temperatures.
Puffer
Puffer coats are so in and I’m honestly so happy because they are by far the warmest, most practical option! These are great for everyday wear and sometimes have a detachable hood. Recently, I love the shorter trend because it really shows off whatever bottoms you are wearing and makes your legs look longer. These are great for skiing in cold climates and running to the kids’ outdoor activities. Canada Goose and North Face have nice longer options as well that are perfect for any upcoming winter trips.
Trench
This is a style that I think has recently taken the world by storm. The oversized fit is always in, but a cropped option has been popping up more and more. There’s nothing better than being cozy in a stylish coat that can comfortably fit a sweatshirt or chunky knit underneath it to complete the perfect on-the-go look! I love the cropped option with a pair of jeans to dress down for the day and up for the night.
Water Resistance
It’s really important that we are protecting ourselves from windy conditions and the snow and rain that can come along with it. Pay close attention to the material of the coats you are purchasing. A waterproof membrane will keep you warmer in the winter and prevent heat loss. I love options with fleece-lined pockets that act as hand-warmer pockets, too. These are great if you have walking involved in your work commute because the entire body needs to be kept warm!
