The days are getting longer, the air smells sweeter, and little buds are starting to peek through the soil. Spring is officially here, and with it comes the perfect opportunity to roll up your sleeves and get planting. Whether you have a sprawling backyard, a cozy balcony, or even just a windowsill, there’s no wrong way to welcome the season with some green thumb magic. It’s early spring and we have been itching over the long winter to get back to our bright colors and new plants for our yard in the warmer months. It’s a great time to go to your local garden center and start thinking about growing season and summer annuals that you would like to start planting. Now that we have warmer weather, we are excited to get back to the full sun and our front porch gardens.
Let’s dive into some fun and creative planting ideas that’ll make your garden the talk of the town this spring!
Colorful Flower Beds
Spring flowers are like nature’s confetti or sprinkles, bright, cheerful, and perfect for adding a pop of color to your garden. Try planting a combination of early bloomers like tulips, daffodils, and hyacinths. The key is to mix different colors and heights to create a lush, layered look. I love a bright color palette and for the new season, it’s one of the easiest ways to bring joy to your yard. If you’re short on space, consider planting in raised beds or spring containers. For a dainty touch, group flowers by color or even create a rainbow looking garden that transitions from one color to the next! We love lavender and lilac because they smell amazing and look really pretty with the new growth!
Herb Garden
Why not bring the taste of spring right into your kitchen? An herb garden is an easy and rewarding way to add flavor to your meals and a touch of green to your space. You can plant basil, mint, thyme, rosemary, and oregano, all great choices for spring. The kids used to love to help me plant herbs to add to our meals! I will never tire of this and I think it’s a good time to get started before grilling season comes. We suggest growing herbs in small containers or repurposed items like teacups or jars! This way, it’s easy to grab them and keep them handy for your kitchen recipes. Just imagine having fresh mint leaves for your mojito or adding a sprig of rosemary to your chicken recipes!
Succulent Sensation
If you’re looking for a low-maintenance option that still adds personality to your garden or home, succulents are the way to go. From the trendy echeveria to the quirky string of pearls, these plants thrive in sunny spots and require minimal watering. I have not tried to grow succulents as we don’t live in a desert environment, but if you do have that type of weather, this would be so cool! You can get creative by arranging them in hanging planters, terrariums, or even creating a succulent wall garden! For extra charm, add decorative rocks or fairy lights to complete the look. This looks great for late spring and early summer and is stepping outside the box from annual flowers.
Vegetable Garden
There’s something incredibly satisfying about growing your own food, and spring is the perfect time to start. Whether you have a huge garden or just a few pots on your windowsill, growing veggies can be a fun family project. This is something we do every year and we look forward to enjoying the fresh vegetables and fruits as we go into the next season. It’s one of our top spring garden ideas and you can even plant by color schemes because there are tons of veggie options. Start with easy-to-grow veggies like lettuce, spinach, radishes, or carrots. If you have more space, try tomatoes, peppers, or cucumbers. Don’t forget to plant a few flowers among your veggies to attract pollinators, though! Last year, we did tomatoes and cucumbers and it was a game changer for fresh salads!
Apartment Friendly
Running out of space? No problem! Vertical gardens are a fantastic solution for smaller spaces like balconies or city apartments. You can build your own vertical garden using pallets, hanging pots, or wall-mounted planters. This setup works wonders for trailing plants like ivy, morning glories, or sweet peas. Plus, it makes a stunning focal point for your outdoor space. As a bonus, vertical gardens are great for maximizing sunlight, so your plants get the best of both worlds. It’s a great way to bring youn plants into your space while keeping it as something that is small and easy to maintain.
Potted Plants
Not all gardens need to be in the ground! A fun way to add greenery to your space is by showcasing an assortment of potted plants. Whether it’s a collection of small indoor plants like pothos and spider plants, or larger outdoor pots with tropical beauties like palm trees, you can create a stylish and versatile look. These can go on porches as long as there is enough sunlight! Try grouping plants in different sizes and shapes, and use a variety of larger container options like terracotta pots or metal buckets. As a general rule, these need good drainage, so make sure your planters provide that. Now is the ideal time to start prepping for this!
