Our Guide to Summer Gardening

A summer garden is one of my simple joys. While it’s getting to be late summer, it’s never too late to pick up a green thumb! The summer heat tends to make it a bit more difficult to stay outside doing summer planting. Early summer is when I like to begin my growing season and beat the heat of summer with spring planting. Seed packets, root vegetables, flowers, the sky is really the limit here. It’s also a great way to destress from the day. If you don’t have a yard, plants thrive indoors, too! This is our ultimate guide to gardening in the summer months.

Pick Your Plants

Firstly, this has to be where you begin with it all. I know garden plants seem like they are a difficult hobby to tend to, but I promise you will get the hang of it. Start with the seasons. It’s warm weather, so if you want to have the type of plant that will grow produce, take the seasons into consideration. For instance, is this prep for a fall crop? In the summers, we grow cucumbers and tomatoes! It doesn’t have to be for fall planting or pepper plants. You can go to your local nursery and begin a bed of flowers in your yard. For florals, we change them out seasonally, but you can absolutely go for the plants that will thrive year round or in most seasons.

Indoor vs Outdoor

Secondly, not everyone has a yard or wants to be outside in the hot season tending to their garden. Indoor plants are just as nice as outdoor. While it’s more difficult to grow produce indoors, you can find direct sunlight and really work on a nice pot of mint or any other seasoning. Moreover, an easy way to bring life into any room is with flowers. A successful garden-indoor or outdoors-is one that is met with patience and care. Take time to water them, get them enough sunlight and they will have new growth. It’s easier to add too much water to indoor plants, so you will want to be mindful of that. Outdoor plants can handle plenty of water from the rain but in a warm climate, they might need a hose taken to them this time of year. Furthermore, one other thing to note about outdoor plants is wildlife. Before you go and spend a ton of money on the right plants and fresh product to plant, make sure you have a fenced in yard where animals can’t eat all of your hard work!

Best Results

Finally, the best results come with patience. They say patience is a virtue and it absolutely is. The best time to start gardening is any time. Take your time with this and make sure you get a head start with a plant to commit to it. Pick those plants, grab nice soil to pot or plant them in and give them some TLC. Water and sunlight are your best friends in this endeavor and you’d be surprised what you can accomplish with a little patience and care!
