Our Summer Bucket List with Teens

Summer looks a little different when your kids are teens. The days of splash pads and snack time have been replaced with later mornings, group chats, and a whole lot more independence. But one thing that has not changed is the magic of a summer bucket list. If anything, it becomes even more special because these moments feel a little more fleeting. This year, we are leaning into simple, feel good plans that give everyone something to look forward to while still letting teens have their space.

Beach + Pool Days

Start with the classics. Beach days and pool days never get old, but let them take the lead. Have them invite friends, pack their own bags, and plan the music for the day. End it with a sunset walk or an impromptu ice cream stop. Those are the moments that stick. We actually like to make our own frozen treats and those can be a great way to connect with your kids and have so much fun making a Sweet treat in the summer months.

Family Movie Nights

Movie nights are also having a comeback, just with a teenage upgrade. Think outdoor setups, cozy blankets, and letting them pick something nostalgic or slightly edgy. Add popcorn, candy and maybe a few friends sprawled across the lawn and suddenly you are the house everyone wants to be at. We think it would be fun to try new things and get a screen projector for the back yard this summer break for an outdoor movie. It’s great quality time and the warm weather is much more bearable at night.

Outdoor Adventures

Get a little adventurous together. Try a new water sport, rent bikes and explore a nearby town or even take a spontaneous day trip with no real plan. Teens may act like they want structure, but it is often the unplanned days that turn into their favorites. If you are near a national park, that is a great way to stay active. Another thing we count as an outdoor adventure is an outdoor concert with every family member. The kids love concerts and honestly so do Jason and I! We’re a music loving family. Furthermore, if your kids like going to an amusement park, count that on the list for at least one day this summer! Bonus points if it has a water park attached.

Try New Restaurants

Food always brings everyone together, even teenagers. Make it a goal to try new spots or create your own themed dinner nights at home. Taco night, pasta night, or even a build your own smoothie bar can feel fun and interactive without being over the top. We’ll be out east all summer and have a full list of restaurants we have our eye on, so if you’re nearby in the city maybe make a road trip and try out new spots, too! And for when we’re in the city, you already know we’ll be trying all the brand new frozen yogurt places that have opened up within the last couple of months.

Try Something New

Do not underestimate the power of a project. Whether it is redecorating a room, starting a small summer business, or putting together a photo book of their favorite memories, teens love having something that feels like their own. It gives them a sense of independence while still creating shared experiences.

Of course, summer is also about slowing down. Encourage moments where everyone unplugs. Morning walks, reading by the water, or even just sitting outside together without an agenda can be surprisingly meaningful. We are always go go go, so this is the perfect opportunity to actually relax this summer as a part of our own bucket list. Some of the best ways to relax are to detach from social media and have the best summer on a scavenger hunt, picnic blanket or try new ice cream makers on those rainy days.

Their Own Summer Bucket List

And finally, let them have their freedom. The beauty of this stage is watching them grow into themselves. The bucket list is not about filling every second, it is about creating opportunities for connection, laughter, and memories that feel effortless. They deserve to have their ultimate summer bucket list themselves and as a mom, I think it’s a great idea to let each kid plan out a day this summer. There’s no better way to spend time together than doing something everyone has had on their list. Because in between the big plans and the small moments, this is the summer you will all remember.
