New York City is finally starting to show signs of fall and we couldn’t be happier. The leaves are slowly starting to change colors, and there’s just something about that crisp cool air. Last week, Ryder and I celebrated the first day of fall as well as the bicentennial of the first cultivated cranberry harvest with Ocean Sprayยฎ. ย
They transformed a 1,500 sq. ft. cranberry bog into a Cranberry Classroom right in the heart of Rockefeller Centerยฎ.ย Ryder and I had the opportunity toย discover and learn more aboutย Ocean Sprayยฎ and the heritage of this amazing berry. We participated in a series of educational activities to learn more about the way cranberries are grown and harvested, their health benefits and their versatility. It was such a neat experience, and we learned so much!
Some of the activities included a Cranberry Classroom set up where we learned the history of Ocean Sprayยฎ, followed by a virtual reality experience of The Most Beautiful Harvest.ย Ocean Sprayยฎ launched the โMost Beautiful Harvestโ video experience in 2015 using Oculus Rift technology. You can too watch this 360-degree harvest experience here. We discovered howย cranberries were grown and made our own bog-in-a-cup, and our most favorite part was when we put onย waders and got into the cranberry bog!
We learned about the multi-generational Ocean Sprayยฎ cranberry growers and even spoke to one on site about the harvest and how itโs changed over the last 200 years. Ryder was so inquisitive and asked a ton of questions. He was so into the experience, the next day he couldn’t wait to go into school and tell his classmates everything he learned.
Here, we are making our own bog in a cup. We were so excited to be able to take ours home.
We love Craisinsยฎ Dried Cranberries in our home and I always give them to the kiddies as a snack or top our salads with them. But one of the kidsโ favorite drinks in which we use Ocean Sprayยฎ Cranberry Juice Cocktail, is when we make them “Shirley’s” as we call them in my home! It’s super easy and a way healthier take on a sweeter drink. 8oz Seltzer/sparkling water, 2oz Ocean Sprayยฎ Cranberry Juice Cocktail, Cherry, Lemon. Stir together and top with a straw! Even when we are dining out, we get these made for the kids!

I am still blown away by our experience, and haven’t stopped talking about it. I think I see a visit up north to actually be able to experience a real bog! Don’t worry, for those who couldn’t make it to the bog, can experience you can visit www.OSharvest.com to learn more and actually see the harvest in 360 degree views.

How cool! I’ve always wondered about the whole bog thing and why the cranberries floated. Great read.
That’s amazing. The bog factor of cranberries has always been so interesting to me. I love that the used this event as a way to educate kids, too.
