Winter is coming! Along with school breaks, and family ski trips ahead, there is so much to plan. I love keeping the kids active and winter, so ski trips are a must for our family of five. Skiing is such a great activity and it’s been incredible watching my kiddies tear it up on the slopes through the years. They’ve for sure by-passed their beginner mama. Plus who doesn’t love coming home to a cozy cabin and sipping hot cocoa with loved ones?
Firstly, when planning our family ski trips, renting a home or cabin makes the most sense for us. Home rentals fit us perfectly and because we enjoy West Coast skiing so much, cabin rentals give us the chance to stay closer to the ski resorts, making extra time for the kids to enjoy their trip. VRBO and HomeAway has been our go-to when planning trips and ensuring a home rental that will fit the needs of our big family. A few things we look for are hot tubs, close distance to ice skating, snow tubing and winter sports as well as ski-out access. Finding the perfect place near outdoor activities to do our favorite things in the winter is a task we don’t take lightly for our winter escape. The good news is that we have a family-friendly destination list full of the best winter vacation ideas for kids of all ages. Choose a popular spot and book your next trip for winter activities.
Here are my top six places I have on my bucket list this season!
Palisades Tahoe, California:
Lake Tahoe is gorgeous and well known for its clear, blue water and ski resorts all around. Palisades Tahoe hosted the Winter Olympics in 1960 so I was worried about finding a place that would fit our family, but VRBO’s search engine makes it effortless. Henceforth, I found a town home within walking distance to the village.
Stowe, Vermont:
Stowe has great cozy town home options! There are plenty centrally located near the slopes, hiking areas, the resort’s pool, and, of course, the beautiful mountain views. If you’re over on the east coast, you can make this a road trip or fly out there. Nature lovers, that enjoy different activities in the snow, this is where you will thrive!
Catskill, New York:
Furthermore, when we don’t have time to travel across the country, mini getaways are what we like to do for the winter weekends, and what better place to spend them than a Bearpen Lodge? There are plenty of family-friendly activities and it’s not too far from the city, so it’s a great destination for a long weekend. With the kids out of school, this is the ideal time to go.
Jackson Hole, Wyoming:
One of my favorite parts of family ski trips is snuggling up with the kids looking out at the breath taking snowy views, and this outpost has just the sight. This destination is perfect for winter break and a great way to see more of the country. We tend to go to larger cities that aren’t as isolated. It’s the perfect destination to explore the west of the country. Not to mention it’s one of the best ski towns.
Bridgehampton, New York:
Swimming is a family fun activity year around, so for rentals to have heated pools like these ones, I have to do it! Another nearby great spot, it really is a top favorite place to relax this time of year. It’s more empty for winter family vacations so you will totally skip the summer crowd in the winter months and have the opportunity to enjoy it. An outdoor pool that’s heated is a plus!
Windham, New York:
These charming rentals are located next to a peaceful stream, where we can just sit and relax after a long day on the slopes. Who needs beautiful beaches when we can ski our hearts out and make s’mores!?
Whether it be location, space, or amenities, VRBO is quick to search through over 2 million properties, worldwide, to find the perfect family-friendly home for our travels.
Be sure to enter in VRBO’s Win the Mountain Sweepstakes will give one lucky winner and up to 19 friends or family members a day of no lift lines or other snow riders in sight. VRBO partnered with Eagle Point Resort in Beaver, Utah to offer the ultimate prize package including private ski instruction, a $5,000 travel stipend and three nights in a magnificent slopeside mansion. We rent whenever possible when we travel. It’s so much cozier to stay in a home.
Need more Midwestern suggestions! These are all too far away for those of us in the best area of the country! 😉
I had no idea that New York had such beautiful places! That snowy one is simply gorgeous and I would love stay there!
It really is such a beautiful state!
I love to stay in homes and apartments, the kitchen and having a washing machine plus more bedrooms means privacy for the kids.
I used to live near Catskill, NY. It is a wonderfully beautiful area and I can see why you feel for the area.
We love the Catskill area!!!
Every place on your list looks amazing! I love a good winter vacation. There is just something about being cuddled up in a beautiful cabin that screams winter.
Isn’t that the best?
