I’m not sure anything fully prepares you for this moment. The one where you’re buying twin XL sheets and realizing your baby is about to live somewhere else. Packing for college isn’t just about stuff, it’s about letting go, a little at a time. And if you’re anything like me, you’re probably wondering: what does my child actually need? We are beginning college life in this house for the very first time with Ryder’s Freshman year quickly approaching. As I’m going to make a list for myself, I realized why not share it with others?
There are so many college students headed to school and school supplies are less needed this time around, with more laundry supplies and dorm room essentials at the top of the list. Move-in day for the school year is rapidly approaching and time is flying by. As we enter dorm life, we are wishing good luck to everyone headed to college campuses in the next couple of weeks! Keep reading for a printable checklist perfect for campus life and new beginnings!
After way too many lists, late-night Amazon orders and texting other moms, I’ve put together the ultimate college packing list that balances practical essentials with those little comforts that make a dorm feel like home. Happy shopping and we cannot wait for this next chapter of your life.
Bedding & Sleep Essentials
Let’s start with the basics, because sleep matters.
- Twin XL sheet sets (2–3 sets)
- Mattress topper (this is non-negotiable, dorm beds are brutal)
- Bed bug protection sheet
- Comforter or duvet
- Pillows (bring at least 2 from home for comfort), we’ve heard boyfriend pillows are great too and bonus points for snagging one of these
- Throw blanket for studying or homesick nights
- Bed risers
- Fan
Bathroom Must-Haves
Whether they have a communal or private bathroom, every college experience will need these items, especially first-year students. These are key:
- Shower caddy
- Shower shoes
- Towels (3-4 sets)
- Toiletries (toothbrush, shampoo, skincare, etc. stock them up)
- Robe as a bonus
- Hair dryer
- Mini mirror
Laundry & Cleaning
Because yes, they will have to do their own laundry now. But this is why we are getting extra sets of everything, for the weeks where laundry is pushed off!
- Laundry hamper or bag
- Detergent pods
- Dryer sheets
- Stain remover
- Disinfecting wipes & paper towels
- Daily shower spray
- Air freshener
- Hand sanitizer
- Hand soap
- First aid kit
Clothing & Storage
Try not to overpack, closet space is tiny.
- Everyday outfits- basics
- Comfortable loungewear
- Workout clothes
- Jacket/coat
- Hangers
- Under-bed storage bins or organizers for extra storage
- Shoe storage solution
School & Desk Supplies
Even in a digital world, these still come in handy:
- Laptop + charger
- Notebooks and planners
- Pens, highlighters
- Desk lamp
- Backpack or tote bag
- Portable chargers
- Adapters for computers
- Batteries
- Flashlight
- Headphones
- Sewing Kit
- Umbrella
- USB
- Air Purifier
Kitchen & Snacks
Even if they have a meal plan, snacks are everything:
- Mini fridge (check roommate coordination first)
- Microwave (if allowed)
- Reusable water bottle
- Water filter
- Coffee maker or electric kettle
- Easy snacks (granola bars, ramen, popcorn)
- Napkins, paper towels, plastic cutlery, paper plates/bowls
- Food storage containers
Personal Touches
This is where it starts to feel like their space:
- Photos from home
- String lights or small decor
- Favorite blanket or pillow
- Storage ottoman if space permits
- A handwritten note (trust me on this one)

Here’s what no one tells you: you won’t get it perfect and that’s okay. They’ll forget things. You’ll ship boxes later. There will be Target runs and “Mom, I need” texts. But what matters most isn’t what’s in the suitcase. it’s that they know they’re supported, loved and just a phone call away. And yes, we will cry after drop-off. But that is okay because we are incredibly proud.
