Kids Halloween Reads

Books are the best way to decompress from a long day. I actually think a good book is essential for young readers because they learn so much and grow to have an appreciation for books in general. I’m staying away from scary stories for these holiday books because my kids read before bed and I don’t want them to be afraid of the spooky season. Instead, I’ve found some great reads full of friendly ghosts and Halloween themes for children’s books. The whole family had a favorite Halloween tradition when the kids were young children, where we went through our favorite books and read them together. With Halloween night approaching, I am sharing our favorite children’s Halloween books for younger readers and even those in middle school.

Halloween Picture Books

Firstly, this is the widest category to shop from. There are so many sweet story reads out there that involve tiny pumpkins sharing information about the holiday itself. A good Halloween story is one that involves pumpkins. If you have little kids, I definitely recommend staying away from a spooky story and going for books that teach language skills and talk about something like a pumpkin patch or pumpkin pie. Even a little witch can teach the kids about Halloween but in a non-scary way. The perfect choice will have lots of pictures and simple text for a cute read before bedtime.

Popular Series

If you have kids in middle school, they are more advanced readers and the perfect book might just be one from a popular series. Only this time, the Halloween spirit is there. Chapter books help them advance their reading skills and also provide entertainment for longer. It takes them awhile to finish a chapter book whereas a kids book is one that can be read in about 5 minutes. New stories come out all the time and I suggest letting them choose their own books. My kids are teenagers and they get a lot of assigned reading at school, which I sometimes worry makes them not enjoy reading as much. But if they are able to pick their own books, they will be reads they look forward to. You can always ask your local library for book recommendations on what’s cool these days!

fall quote

Firstly, we are Jimmy Fallon fans and love to get his cute children’s books. This one is perfect for Halloween and is a fun countdown to have.
Secondly, this book is for tweens and is not spooky but more of a mystery. It’s about two friends who encounter a ghost while a painting goes missing.
Thirdly, it wouldn’t be Halloween without a witch tale, would it? This book for little ones is about a witch who loses her belongings in the wind and animals help her get them back. Kindness is everywhere.
Fourthly, for those kids that love Peppa, this is a classic book! Peppa is carving pumpkins, sharing candy and hosting a Halloween party.
Another adorable read, this one is for really little ones. It’s a picture book that has a rhyme to it and a nice read before bed.
For those looking for a seasonal alphabet book, look no further! It’s perfect for Halloween and the illustrations are super cute.
Everyone experiences a bit of shyness and some more than others. This book teaches kids that it’s okay to feel shy and helps them come out of their shells a bit. If your little one has some shyness with trick or treating, this is the read for you!
You know we love all things pink! This ghost is the only pink ghost around while the others make fun of her for being different. It’s okay to be different and this read helps kids understand that being different is what makes everyone so special.
Furthermore, are your kids looking forward to dressing up this year? These are fun to read rhymes and all about the joy of dressing up for the holiday!
For the little ones that love books that make noise, you will enjoy this! It’s a cute and quick read with fun Halloween sounds.
When a school has all the pumpkins roll away but one, they have to make do with what they have. It teaches kids the lesson of making lemonade out of lemons.
Moreover, while this one sounds scary, it’s really for kids ages 3-7 so it is safe to read before bed! It’s written by Lance Bass and more of a suspense book.
Written for tweens, this is one to read in daylight! It’s spooky tales inspired by legends along with some images that are creatively Halloween.
For those who maybe have moved recently or started a new school, this is the perfect read! Making friends is a scary concept but really we all are looking for more friends! It helps kids understand that everyone is in the same position.
Finally, while this one is less Halloween-themed, I do like to have multicultural options to teach kids about different cultures. Written for kids aged 4-8, this book is great at explaining how everyone is different and our cultures actually shape our identities through food and so much more. It’s really cool to learn about what makes everyone different.
