Our neighborhood of Battery Park City has changed drastically since Jason and I moved here from Chelsea over 9 years old. We had no intention on staying as long as we have, and absolutely no clue that it would become the most family friendly neighborhood in NYC. During the recent months, the Financial Center and surrounding areas have gone under major renovations, resulting in opening up many new restaurants in our hood, which we are forever grateful for. As much as I love cooking for my children, all mamas need a day off and nothing is better than dining at a family-friendly restaurant that your children will actually enjoy!
One of the newest and my latest obsession, El Vez, a STARR restaurant of Mexican style cuisine. My family and I tried out the new addition last week and have been back twice since, seriously. It’s super family friendly, yet hosts an incredible happy hour for adults and works for both types of parties because the space is just massive. And it’s absolutely gorgeous inside, from murals like this (above) to beautiful colored-glass light fixtures.
With deep roots in regional Mexican cooking, the menu is built around guacamoles, fundidos, ceviches, tacos, quesadillas and enchiladas made from scratch. Meanwhile, the bar offers a large selection of creative cocktails, signature margaritas and wide selection of tequilas. Jason and I both tried the cucumber mint margarita, and it was probably the best I’ve ever tasted.
We were super impressed to see a kids menu featuring quesadillas, mahi mahi bites, and usual go-to chicken fingers. My children opted for the chicken quesadillas with a side of corn, and ate every single bite. Not to mention, they fully enjoyed and devoured the guacamole. El Vez is casual, yet contemporary dining celebrating the festive soul of Mexican and Mexican-American culture. I am so excited for this new addition in our neighborhood!
