At Home Fall Workout Essentials

As summer winds down and our schedules start filling up again, our workout routines naturally shift too. Between school drop-offs, work, after-school activities, appointments and everything else that comes with fall, making it to a class or gym every day is not always realistic. That is why we love having a few simple at-home workout essentials. It makes it easy to squeeze in movement whenever we have the time.

Fall workouts are a good reason to stay active while the seasons are changing and it’s getting colder out.  The cool weather can sometimes make us feel unproductive. So finding fitness products we’re excited to use makes all the hard work worth it. Now is the perfect time to revamp your at home gym. You don’t need a personal trainer in order to use these items, which is the best part. The holiday season is on it’s way and before things get busy, we are nailing a good workout to take through the season.

The goal is not to recreate a full gym in your home. Especially if you are working out in a smaller space. The best equipment is the kind that is versatile, easy to store and can be used for several different types of workouts. From weighted vests and resistance bands to a good exercise mat and a walking pad, these are some of our favorite pieces for making at-home workouts feel more effective without taking over your space.

Weighted Vests

One of our favorite additions to an at-home workout routine is a weighted vest. If you already enjoy walking, bodyweight exercises, Pilates or strength workouts, these are great. A weighted vest can add another challenge without requiring a bunch of additional equipment. Wear it on a fall run or around the house while you pick up things and do daily tasks through the winter months. It’s that time of year where  motivation starts to get foggy. This is a great choice for a workout essential that you don’t even notice until you start seeing results. We love these for colder weather accessories for working out.

I especially love the idea of wearing one during a walk or while using a walking pad. It can also be incorporated into squats, lunges and other bodyweight movements. The nice thing about a vest is that it keeps your hands free. So you can continue doing exercises that you already enjoy while adding resistance.

If you are new to weighted vests, start with something manageable. Then focus on your form and comfort rather than immediately reaching for the heaviest option.

Resistance Bands

Resistance bands are one of those small pieces of equipment that can do so much more than you might expect. They take up practically no storage space and can be used for everything from lower-body strength exercises to arm workouts and mobility work.

We like keeping a few different resistance levels on hand because they allow you to adjust the difficulty depending on the exercise. You can use them for squats, glute exercises, rows, presses and so many other movements. They are also fantastic for a quick 15 or 20-minute workout when you do not have time for a full class.

A Good Exercise Mat

A workout mat is an absolute essential for an at-home fitness setup. Even if you are not doing traditional yoga or Pilates, having a dedicated surface makes floor exercises, stretching, core work and strength training much more comfortable.

When shopping for one, we look for something with enough cushioning to support knees and joints while still being stable enough for standing exercises. A mat also helps create a little mental separation between your workout space and the rest of your home. Roll it out and you are ready to go.

Ankle and Wrist Weights

If you love low-impact workouts, ankle and wrist weights are another easy way to add resistance without bringing large equipment into your home. They are especially useful for Pilates, barre, walking and bodyweight exercises. If you are doing outdoor workouts, these are perfect for walking and come in tons of fun color options. These fit in a gym bag and are added cute details these days for workout wear. I find that they fit under jackets, comfy hoodies and sweats for those chilly workouts outdoors, too.

They are small enough to tuck into a drawer or basket when you are finished, which is a huge bonus when your workout space doubles as your living space.

Walking Pad

We are big fans of anything that makes getting more movement into the day easier, and a walking pad is one of our favorite options. It is especially useful when you work from home or have a busy schedule and cannot always dedicate an hour to exercising.

You can walk while listening to a podcast, catching up on emails or taking a break between tasks. Many walking pads are slim enough to slide under a bed or couch when you are finished, making them much more practical for smaller spaces than a traditional treadmill.

Foam Roller and Recovery Tools

Working out is only part of the routine. Recovery matters too. A foam roller, massage ball or simple stretching strap can be helpful additions to your home setup and take up very little room. These are amazing for sore muscles and a great option for post workout recovery. We use these for tough workouts and even simpler ones. It’s all about making routines, especially for the in-between weather.

We like keeping recovery equipment nearby because it makes it much more likely that we will actually use it. Even a few minutes of stretching or mobility work after a workout can become a great way to wind down.

Keep It Simple

The biggest lesson we have learned with at-home workouts is that you do not need much equipment to begin. A mat, resistance bands, a weighted vest, small weights and a walking pad can give you plenty of options without requiring an entire home gym.

Especially during the fall, when everyone’s schedules seem to get busier overnight, having equipment that is easy to grab and easy to put away makes staying consistent so much easier. The best workout routine is ultimately the one you can actually stick with, and creating a simple setup that works for your space and your lifestyle can make all the difference.
