A Rustic Retreat for the Family

Pine Ridge Dude Ranch has been a name synonymous with rustic family fun for more than 40 years. Located in southwest New York in the town of Kerhonkson, the ranch has long been known for its horses, history, and friendliness. In fact, the ranch has become a tradition for many people across the state and in surrounding states, as well. It’s one of those places that melts away all your worries and leaves you feeling refreshed and recharged. That’s due largely to both the scenery and the incredible staff at the resort. I’ve been looking into taking my family for a little getaway to Pine Ridge Dude Ranch, as it’ll be a welcome change from our fast-paced New York City life.

The history of Pine Ridge Dude Ranch is just as amazing as the feeling you get when you stay there. The story of the ranch is an entire post in and of itself, so I’m giving you the short version. You can read the full history here in Hudson Valley Magazine. The long and short of it is that the ranch was in business for 40 years until the prior owner died suddenly in 2017. He was only 50 years old.

This tragic turn of events played out a little bit like a movie. 34 horses were taken to an auction and 90 jobs were lost after the ranch was left without an owner. That was a huge hit to a poor rural community. It seemed like Pine Ridge Dude Ranch would become just a fond memory, but the barn manager at the time organized an effort to save the horses from the auction AND purchase the property, which he did in January 2018.

Since then, the new owners have poured $2 million dollars into the ranch, renovating and restoring it. Since its reopening in April of 2018, Pine Ridge Dude Ranch has been featured as a Top 10 Famil Vacation by Resorts & Lodges. It’s also been chosen as one of the Top 100 Family Spots by Hudson Valley Parent Magazine for 2019.

It’s not hard for me to see why. Im incredibly impressed by the entire ranch. The feel of it is so welcoming and warm. The horses and the countryside are absolutely beautiful, as well. Plus, they have tons of activities to experience. Of course, trail riding is one of the biggest draws to the resort, but there’s so much more to do. There’s a day camp for the younger kids. Older visitors can try archery, enjoy paddle-boats and fishing on the lake, a rock-climbing wall, indoor and outdoor pools, and more. They even have a fitness center with available massages. AND let’s not forget Kawasaki the bull and the goats and chickens that you can meet and I heard they’re the sweetest.

Pine Ridge Dude Ranch is an amazing escape for any family. We’ll definitely be going soon, and I think anyone who needs to slow their lives down for a bit should go, too. The atmosphere is one utter peace, and the staff treats you like family. It’s the perfect place to slow down, bond with your loved ones, and remember that there is still hope for humanity.
