There is truly nothing better than finding a great book when the weather starts to cool down. As soon as fall arrives, we are ready to trade some of our summer activities for cozy nights at home, oversized sweaters, a warm drink, and a book we cannot put down. Whether you love a page-turning thriller, a romantic story, historical fiction, fantasy, or something a little more emotional, fall is the perfect time to update your reading list.
One of our favorite things about reading during this season is that there is no one type of fall book. Some readers want a dark and mysterious thriller that feels perfect for October, while others are looking for an easy romance to read under a blanket on a rainy afternoon. We love mixing up our reading list and choosing books based on our mood. Sometimes we want a book that completely transports us somewhere else, and other times we are looking for something fun and entertaining that we can finish over the course of a weekend. Cozy fall books, a cup of tea and a warm blanket are the perfect way to wind down. If you’re in a reading rut, maybe try a fresh start from this list of books.

This season, we have our eye on a mix of newer releases and recent books that are still perfect to add to your fall TBR list. From buzzy fiction and romance to mysteries and atmospheric stories, these are the kinds of books we cannot wait to cozy up with this fall.
The Rom-Com Pick
A good romantic comedy is always a welcome addition to our reading list, especially when we need something light and fun. Fall can be a busy season between work, school, activities, and the upcoming holidays, so sometimes you want a book that feels like an escape. Look for a recent romance with plenty of chemistry, a great setting, and characters you will be rooting for from the very beginning. Who doesn’t love a second-chance romance or a small-town romance? Romance novels seem to be really popular lately and I find them to be easy reads to wind down after a long day. They make for some of the best fall books, especially on rainy days. It’s the perfect season to curl up with a cozy romance.
We especially love books with autumnal small-town settings, complicated love stories, funny main characters, and just enough drama to keep us turning the pages. A great romance is the perfect choice for a cozy Sunday at home or a long flight during fall travel season. If you are looking to build a seasonal reading stack, definitely include one book that is simply fun to read.
The Thriller You Will Stay Up Too Late Reading
Fall and thrillers just go together. There is something about darker evenings and chilly weather that makes a twisty mystery even more fun. This is the time of year when we want suspense, shocking reveals, unreliable characters, and endings that have us immediately texting someone else who has read the book. The best way to get back into reading is with a fast-paced exciting book. Last year, we didn’t read too much of this category but we plan on giving it another try to add to our autumn reading list. Quirky characters with a secret history seem to make for a good book.
New psychological thrillers are especially great for readers who want something fast-paced. Look for stories centered around secrets, friendships, family drama, mysterious disappearances, or a character whose story may not be quite what it seems. The best part about a good thriller is that you can tell yourself you will read just one more chapter and suddenly realize it is way past your bedtime.
For October, we always recommend adding at least one darker, moodier book to the list. It does not have to be full-on horror to feel perfect for spooky season. An atmospheric mystery or psychological thriller can give you all the suspense you are looking for while still being an easy and entertaining read.
The Book Everyone Will Be Talking About
We also love adding one of the year’s buzziest books to our fall reading list. There is always a new novel making the rounds online, showing up in book clubs, and becoming the book everyone is recommending to their friends. These are fun choices because you have plenty of people to discuss them with once you finish. Some of the best books are from book clubs! And quite a few books get turned into movies and tv shows, so we like to stay ahead of the crowd. New releases that have a lot of good PR have got to make our list for the fall season. Full disclosure, we do reread books we love! Some of my favorite fall books are just those heartwarming stories.
Literary fiction does not have to mean slow or difficult. Some of the most talked-about books combine beautiful writing with complicated relationships, family stories, friendship drama, and characters who stay with you long after the final page. Fall is a great time to pick up a book that feels a little more thoughtful and immersive.
This is also a fun category to shop for if you are part of a book club. Choose a new release that has plenty to unpack, make a cozy dinner, and turn your next gathering into a full fall night in.
The Escape Into Another World
Sometimes the best book is the one that completely takes you somewhere else. Fantasy, historical fiction, and sweeping adventure stories are perfect for readers who want to escape their everyday routine. If you have a few quiet hours to yourself, there is nothing better than getting lost in a world that feels completely different from your own.
Fantasy has become one of the most exciting genres to watch, with plenty of books offering romance, adventure, magic, and unforgettable characters all in one story. Historical fiction is another great choice for fall, especially if you enjoy stories that bring a different time period to life while still focusing on emotional relationships and compelling characters.
These tend to be the books you want to take your time with. Make yourself a cup of coffee or tea, light a candle, and enjoy the experience of getting completely immersed in the story.
Build Your Fall Reading Stack
Our favorite fall reading lists include a little bit of everything. Pick one romance for when you want something fun, one thriller for a late-night reading session, one buzzy new release to talk about with friends, and one immersive book that can transport you somewhere entirely new.
Reading is one of our favorite ways to slow down during the season. Before the holiday rush begins, there is still time to enjoy a quiet evening at home and do something just for yourself. Whether you finish one book this fall or work your way through an entire stack, we hope these picks inspire you to make a little extra time for reading.
Grab your favorite blanket, make yourself a warm drink, and get ready to cozy up with a new story. Fall reading season is officially here, and our TBR lists are only getting longer.
