Thanksgiving is one of our favorite holidays to dress for because the outfit possibilities are truly endless. You want to look put together for family photos and spending time with everyone you love, but you also want to be comfortable enough to sit around the table, eat a big meal, help in the kitchen, and relax on the couch afterward. For us, the perfect Thanksgiving outfit is all about finding that balance between cozy and elevated.

This is also one of those holidays where you can really have fun with fall fashion. Rich colors, an oversized sweater, knee-high boots, plaid, and extra layer pieces all feel right at home this time of year. Whether you are hosting at home, heading to a family member’s house, going out to a restaurant, or traveling for the holiday, there are so many ways to put together a look that feels festive without looking like you tried too hard.
This year, we are leaning into comfortable fabrics, beautiful fall colors, and versatile pieces that can be worn again throughout the holiday season. Here are the Thanksgiving outfit ideas we have our eye on.
Dresses
A great dress is always an easy option for Thanksgiving. You do not have to spend time figuring out multiple pieces, and with the right style, you can look completely put together while still feeling comfortable. Personally, I find comfort in any dress because I love to dress up. But a sweater dress could be the perfect balance of comfort and fashion for family dinner. Dress code is wear what makes you feel comfortable. My girls and I love putting together cute Thanksgiving outfits and making it dressier occasions most of the time. There’s nothing more fun than feeling pretty while eating pumpkin pie at the dinner table surrounded by loved ones after a cozy dinner.
We really do love sweater dresses for cooler weather because they are cozy while still feeling elevated. A midi length is especially versatile and looks great paired with tall boots, ankle boots, or even a more casual flat depending on your plans.
This season, we also have our eye on rich shades like chocolate brown, burgundy, deep olive, navy, and warm neutrals. These colors feel perfect for Thanksgiving without being overly themed. A simple dress in a beautiful seasonal color can do all the work for you.
Elevated Denim
If your Thanksgiving plans are more casual, denim is always a good idea. The key is choosing a pair that is comfortable enough to wear all day and pairing it with pieces that make the outfit feel a little more special. Wide-leg jeans are super in style right now and they happen to be the perfect combination of comfort and fashion for a less formal Thanksgiving dinner.
Try straight leg jeans or relaxed jeans with a soft sweater, cardigan, or blouse. Add ankle boots, loafers, or ballet flats to finish the look. You can also add a blazer or structured jacket if you want the outfit to feel more polished. Denim is especially great if your day includes traveling or spending time outside. You can dress it up or down and easily add layers if the weather changes.
Statement Sweaters
Thanksgiving is the perfect excuse to wear a sweater you are excited about. A chunky knit, interesting texture, fun pattern, or oversized silhouette can become the centerpiece of your entire outfit.
We love pairing a statement sweater with simple bottoms, whether that is a satin skirt, dark denim, tailored trousers, or comfortable leggings for a more casual gathering. If your family takes a lot of photos during the holidays, a sweater with texture can also look beautiful in pictures.
Plaid, cable knit, ribbed textures, and subtle autumn-inspired patterns are all great choices. Just make sure the sweater still feels like something you can wear again after Thanksgiving.
Comfort
Our number one Thanksgiving fashion rule is to wear something you genuinely feel good in. There is no reason to spend an entire holiday adjusting an uncomfortable dress or wearing shoes that hurt your feet.
Think about your plans before getting dressed. Are you helping cook? Traveling? Walking around outside? Taking family photos? Spending the day with kids? Choose your outfit based on what your actual day will look like.
Layers are always a smart idea, especially if you are moving between different homes or spending part of the day outdoors. A cardigan, jacket, blazer, or coat can easily change the look of an outfit while keeping you comfortable.
Thanksgiving fashion should be fun, easy, and a little festive. We are looking forward to wearing our favorite fall pieces, spending time with family, and taking plenty of photos along the way. Whether you are dressing up or keeping things casual this year, choose something that makes you feel confident and comfortable enough to enjoy every single bite of dinner.
