There’s nothing quite like a summer road trip, but when you’re traveling with kids, preparation is everything. The right essentials can turn hours in the car from stressful to smooth and fun. Whether you’re heading to the beach, the mountains or somewhere in between, having a go-to list of car-friendly activities and must-haves will make all the difference. These are perfect for long road trips with young kids and even teens. Our list of items work for every family member and make for the perfect road trip activities and ways to pass the time with a lot of fun. Here are 13 summer road trip essentials for kids that will keep everyone happy from departure to destination.
1. Coloring Books & Crayons
A classic for a reason, coloring books are one of the easiest ways to keep kids entertained without screens. They’re lightweight, mess-free with washable markers or crayons and encourage creativity during long stretches of time in the car. This is a great moment to include a themed or personalized coloring book that keeps them extra engaged. It’s something new always feels exciting at the start of a trip. This is more for little kids to have car activities but if anyone gets motion sickness you might want to skip this for long drives.
2. Smart Tablet or iPad
For longer drives, a tablet can be a lifesaver. Load it up ahead of time with movies, TV shows, games, and educational apps so you’re not relying on WiFi. Kid-friendly headphones are key here to keep things peaceful for everyone else in the car. A sturdy case and car mount can also make it easier for hands-free viewing. My teens especially use these to watch movies when we travel, they are perfect for the whole family.
3. Snack Organizer
Snacks are non-negotiable on a road trip. Instead of tossing everything into one bag, use a compartmentalized snack organizer or bento-style box so kids can easily grab what they want. Think a mix of healthy options and fun treats to keep morale high. Bonus points for spill-proof containers and reusable snack bags. It’s a great way to pack snacks and keep organized and mess free. A travel tray is perfect for long trips.
4. Reusable Water Bottles
Hydration is key, especially during hot summer drives. Reusable water bottles with straws or easy-open lids are perfect for kids and help cut down on spills. Insulated options are great for keeping drinks cold for hours, especially if you’re on the road all day. You need this for short trips and several hour road trip plans. Pack one for your next road trip!
5. Travel Activity Kits
Beyond coloring, having a small kit of activities can go a long way. Think sticker books, magnetic games, card games, or small puzzles that are easy to use on a lap. You can even create a DIY kit in a pouch or small bag so each child has their own set of activities to rotate through during the trip. Activity books give you hours of fun for older toddlers.
6. Comfort Items (Blankets & Neck Pillows)
Long car rides often lead to naps, and having cozy essentials on hand makes a big difference. A lightweight blanket and a kid-sized neck pillow can help them get comfortable and actually rest. Plus, familiar comfort items can be especially helpful for younger kids who may feel out of routine. Our first road trip, we forgot these and trust me when I tell you these are essential for car trips.
7. Backseat Organizer
A backseat organizer is one of those things you don’t realize you need until you have one. It keeps everything: snacks, tablets, books, water bottles, within reach and prevents constant “can you grab this for me?” moments. Look for one with multiple pockets and compartments to keep things neat and accessible. Especially if you have young children, it’s a great idea and good way to stay organized.
8. Handheld Gaming Device
This is a big one, especially for slightly older kids. A handheld console like a Switch or even a retro-style Game Boy is perfect because it feels more “special” than a tablet and keeps them engaged longer. It’s great for independent play and doesn’t require WiFi, just don’t forget chargers or extra batteries. A great game can make a road trip more fun.
9. Books
Physical books are underrated for road trips. Bring a mix: easy reads, favorites, and maybe one new book to keep things exciting. For younger kids, picture books still work well in the car. You can also layer in audiobooks for a shared experience everyone can listen to together, which is great for screen-free time. Again, if you have motion sickness maybe skip this one but road trips are a good time to read tons of books!
10. Headphones (Kid-Friendly + Backup Pair)
You mentioned tablets, but calling this out separately is key. Kids lose or break headphones constantly, having a backup pair avoids meltdowns mid-drive. For anyone who has a car with built in dvd players, you will want the kids to have headphones!
11. Car Trash Solution
Not glamorous, but essential. A small trash bin, bag, or even a designated pouch keeps wrappers and clutter under control so your car doesn’t turn into chaos by hour two. A successful road trip is one with minimal cleanup and minimum complaining. Quiet time and a clean car.
12. Wet Wipes & Mini Clean-Up Kit
Between snacks, spills, and sticky hands, this is a must. Think wipes, tissues, and maybe even a small towel. It makes a huge difference.
13. Surprise “New Toy” or Activity
This is a pro move. Bring 1–2 small, new (or forgotten) items and introduce them mid-trip when energy dips. It resets the vibe instantly.
