Kicking Off The Holiday Season, literally!

There is no better place to be during the holidays than at the Radio City Christmas Spectacular to get that yuletide spirit kicking! We visit Rock Center quite a few times during the holidays, and a bunch of our favorite places is in our NYC Guide to the Holidays which can be found HERE.

We’ve been to the show almost every year since Ryder was a year old. I remember my parents taking my siblings and I when we were younger. I’m always excited to see what they add and change in parts of the plot, while keeping the classics like The Twelve Days Of Christmas, and the toy soldier number. This year, Siella and I had the ultimate opportunity, thanks to Lexus, to actually take a lesson with the NYC Rockettes! Siella is super into dance so I knew she would get a kick (pun intended) out of it!

Our one hour class took place in the iconic halls of Radio City Music Center. If you guys can ever do a tour, I highly recommend it. The history, the decor, the rooms and furniture are all untouched and lots of original pieces- what a sight to see. Siella and I slowly walked through corridors as tourists, before reaching the studio for our lesson! We were greeted by two Rockettes for our lesson- one had been a Rockette for 12 years and the other 7 years.

Our lesson included lots of kicking, along with practice for toy solider skit, which Siella was thrilled about! We learned about their luxe costumes, a few tricks like adding a jump to the kick, and even how they all do their own hair and makeup before the show. They even told us about some of the Rockette history. I mean, the Rockettes have been around for as long as I can remember, but did you know they date back to 1933! Makes sense how this annual tradition is full of rich history, since its been 85 years since the show’s inception!

And as if the lesson wasn’t enough of a treat, Lexus invited us to watch the Christmas Spectacular Show that afternoon, where our two wonderful Rockette teachers performed! You guys, this year the show has some new surprises that you won’t want to miss it! In fact, we loved the show so much, that I felt bad about excluding Ryder and Gemma, so the entire family is headed back next week for another round!

Thank you so much to Lexus for this once in a lifetime opportunity, which Siella and I will cherish!

  1. Seeing the Rockettes live has long been a Christmas bucket list wish for me. I was in New York a decade ago, and hoped to go, and we couldn’t make it work for our schedule. I hope to see them some day in the very near future!

  2. When I was younger and could actually kick my leg higher than my knee, I would have loved taking the class. Now, I just think it would be painful. I still love watching them though.

  3. They are absolutely iconic! I am sure it was such a special visit to see and learn from the Rockettes. I would love to spend the holidays in NYC.

  4. How neat that you were able to go behind the scenes! I have never been to see the Rockettes, but it would be a really neat experience. I’m sure my kids would love to go.
