Fall Productivity Hacks for Parents

There is something about the end of September that makes me want to hit the reset button. The kids are back in school, summer schedules are officially behind us, and suddenly our calendars are filling up with practices, appointments, activities, work commitments, and everything in between. While I love the slower pace of summer, there is something comforting about getting back into a routine and having a little more structure in our days. It’s more than making a to-do list for things to check off the next day. Of course, finding that balance as a mom is easier said than done, which is why I’m sharing some of my favorite productivity hacks that help our family stay organized without making life feel overly scheduled.

Start With One Family Calendar

My first productivity hack is also one of the simplest: get everything in one place. Between school schedules, sports, extracurriculars, birthdays, appointments, work events, and social plans, it is nearly impossible to keep everything straight in your head. I swear it’s the best thing and a total game changer. We even do meal planning on here and it helps with daily routines. At the end of the day, anything that helps a busy mom with meal prep is a win for me. It’s the little things.

At the beginning of each season, I like to sit down and add all of the important dates to our family calendar. We use a shared digital calendar so everyone can see what is coming up, but I also love having a visual calendar at home. It helps us quickly see busy weeks and plan ahead instead of realizing on Sunday night that we have somewhere to be every single day.

Plan the Week Before It Starts

Sunday is a great time to take a few minutes to look ahead at the week. I check our schedules, figure out which nights will be especially busy, and make a rough plan for meals, errands, workouts, and anything else that needs to happen. I never have enough time to stop and think in the moment, so making time blocks to get ahead and batch tasks actually ends up giving me a little bit of extra  time.

This does not have to be a perfectly detailed schedule. In fact, I think leaving some room for flexibility is important. The goal is simply to know what is coming so you are not constantly making decisions at the last minute.

Prep the Night Before

This is an old-school mom hack for a reason. Taking even 15 minutes at night to prepare for the morning can make a huge difference. This is a make or break for your morning routine and gives you more control of your time.

We try to get backpacks packed, outfits picked out, lunches started and anything needed for activities ready to go before everyone heads to bed. It might seem like a small thing, but eliminating those little morning decisions can make the entire start of the day feel calmer.

Create a Few Go-To Meals

I love trying new recipes, but busy fall evenings are not always the time to experiment. Having a few easy dinners that everyone likes is one of my favorite ways to save time during a hectic week. I have a full-time job and  between running from meetings, shoots and getting the kids to and from after school activities, I find myself having very few minutes of alone time. The amount of time it takes to cook is really not practical for me for those busy days. Daily life gets crazy and having that little time where I can sit and have a good meal that is all ready to go has been amazing.

Think tacos, pasta, sheet pan dinners, grain bowls, soups or anything else your family can eat quickly between activities. I also like keeping a few freezer-friendly meals on hand for those nights when the schedule completely gets away from us.

Give Everything a Home

One of the easiest ways to make a home feel more organized is to make sure everything has a designated place. This is especially helpful for the things that somehow disappear every morning, like shoes, water bottles, chargers and school supplies. Each family member knows where everything goes and it’s the best way to keep a clutter free space. Even in the evening routine to just do a quick pick up around the house and immediately have a place for everything.

We have designated spots for backpacks and everyday essentials, which makes it much easier for everyone to grab what they need and get out the door. The key is making the system simple enough that the kids can actually maintain it themselves.

Make Time for Yourself Too

Productivity does not mean filling every available minute. One of the biggest lessons I have learned is that making time for yourself can actually make the rest of your day feel more manageable.

Whether it is getting in a workout, having coffee before everyone wakes up, taking a walk, reading a few pages of a book or simply sitting quietly for ten minutes, those little moments matter. Fall is the perfect time to reset our routines, but that routine should include us too.

The goal this season is not to become the mom who does everything perfectly. It is to find systems that make everyday life feel a little easier, give everyone more structure and leave a little more room for the moments that actually matter. Because no matter how organized the calendar is, there will always be unexpected things that pop up. A little planning just helps us feel more prepared when they do.
