Small Space

Firstly, when it comes to living in a smaller space, there are certain organizational items you need to help make it feel a little larger. Items such as an over the door shoe organizer, under the bed storage and plastic bins are a helpful start. There are other essentials that make the space feel homey and comfortable. These can be things like a mattress pad to make the dorm room feel cozy. Our comprehensive list below includes essential items to check off and get everything you might possibly need for college life. The first thing you need to do is check out what the university provides in the room and communal bathroom and go from there.

Communal Items

Secondly, a lot of freshmen share their space with others. We pulled a few items that are perfect for those late-night study sessions and to make the space feel like a new home. Getting area rugs and additional furniture to make the space feel more cozy are a few ways to make college move-in day better. The following items are at the top of our list for dorm essentials. If your college doesn’t provide a small refrigerator for the room, you will definitely want to put a mini fridge on your college dorm room checklist. It’s a first year essential along with a water filter to put into it. Some people get hot plates but with a meal plan, your child doesn’t necessarily need this. Another communal item that is essential is a desk lamp. It provides a little more light to the limited space especially for the desks and late night studying.

Fun Shopping

Finally, this is the fun category and the sky is the limit here. Or the size of the room is for that matter. We found our favorite seating options for those that have a bit more room in their space. Additionally, things like command strips, fun bedding and decor items are a great addition for your teens to pick out. They all need a shower caddy and shower shoes freshman year so maybe go for fun prints or splurge on these items knowing that they will be used every single day.
