Movie Review: What Maisie Knew

My life is beyond crazy and hectic these days. I find it amazing how one minute I am running around with my kids in the playground, and the next sitting in a swanky screening room in Nolita watching Julianne Moore’s newest movie “What Maisie Knew“. The lovely event was hosted by Momtrends and Millennium Entertainment. Just a small group of us gathered to view the movie and afterwards we were able to have a Q&A with Julianne Moore and directors Scott McGehee and David Siegel.

The movie, based in New York City, is about a young girl who is caught in the middle of her parents’ bitter divorce and custody battle. I really don’t want to give away the details of the movie, but it’s way more than your usual divorce and having the children split up time between each parent. The movie takes you on this journey through the eyes of Maisie, a six-year-old’s innocence, charm and generosity of spirit in the ever-widening turmoil of her parents issues. Let me just say that there wasn’t a dry eye in the room when the movie was over, and almost all of us said we wanted to go home and hug our kids at that moment. It’s the kind of movie where it stays with you and resonates in your head over and over again.

The movie was beyond moving, and the young Onata Aprile’s performance as Maisie was outstanding. I was surprised to learn she was casted for the film only three weeks before the shoot date. Other lead actors/actresses included Steve Coogan, Alexander Skarsgard, and Joanna Vanderham whom were all amazing in each of their roles! The fabulous NYC settings were so incredibly bright and so real. And bravo to the wardrobe stylist, Jodi Baldwin because you totally captured the heart and spirit of a six year old girl…Wovenplay anyone. “What Maisie Knew” will be playing at the Angelika this Friday, May 3rd. I totally recommend you all go see this movie especially moms! Check out the trailer…

SITC was not compensated for this post but did receive a fun surprise from Julianne Moore ~ The Collection of Freckle Face Strawberry books.
