Once On This Island

I grew up right outside of Manhattan, both my parents worked here so frequent trips into the city happened likely. Broadway and theater has been a way of life for me for as long as I can remember. My first show on Broadway was The Lion King with my mom. I can remember exactly where I was sitting in the theater and still see the cast marching down the aisles! I’ve continued my love of Broadway now into adulthood, but also into motherhood exposing my children to new shows and these same experiences.

Recently, I received an invite to Once on This Island, the new musical, which I immediately said YES to! I brought along my sis for this one-act musical. I didn’t know this, but the original Broadway production ran from 1990 to 1991. The musical is now being revived in a production that opened December, 2017 at the Circle in the Square Theatre.

As soon as you walk in the theater you are transported to the French Antilles in the Caribbean Sea. The show includes elements of the Romeo and Juliet story and of the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale The Little Mermaid.

Once On This Island

Once On This Island is the universal tale of Ti Moune, a fearless peasant girl, who is in search of her place in the world, and ready to risk it all for love. Guided by the mighty island gods (played by Tony Award winner Lea Salonga, Alex Newell, Merle Dandridge, and Quentin Earl Darrington), Ti Moune sets out on a journey to reunite with the man who has captured her heart. This musical celebrates love, resilience and the spirit of hope.
