To Montauk, With Love

Call me a creature of habit, but for the past nine years we’ve spent the week between Christmas and New Years out east, but this year, I decided to change it up a bit. We still headed east, but we split our trip spending a portion of time at Gurney’s Montauk Resort & Seawater Spa. During the summer months, we’ve enjoyed some warm weather stays, but we’ve never experienced it in winter. Two days after Christmas, we packed up what felt like our entire house, dogs included, and hit the road. Normally, we get out of dodge the day after Christmas, but coming off major head colds, we gave ourselves two days to recoup.

When I was younger, I recall my mom taking trips there, for a spa weekend with the girls. Now that I have had an opportunity to experience it first hand, I understand how they waited with anticipation as their annual trip rolled around.

Gurney’s is such a special place with tons of history, dating back to the 1920’s. Situated on Montauk’s most pristine oceanfront, Gurney’s is the perfect year-round resort. The property has 146 rooms, suites, and beachfront cottages, all with beautiful ocean views, and for our few days there, we were lucky enough to stay in one of the cottages. We had two floors, three full bathrooms, a cozy wood burning fireplace, outdoor patio, and two decks overlooking the roaring ocean. We truly were in heaven waking up to the crashing waves each morning, and watching the sunsets from our patio. I loved our two bedroom cottage so much, that I’ve already started to inquire about summertime.

Since many businesses are closed in Montauk for the winter season, it was convenient that Gurneys had an array of food and beverage options, including elegant seasonal cuisine, and casual fare. Tillie’s restaurant was our fave, and we had at least one meal per day, during our stay. They had tones of American favorites with locally harvested fish, including clam chowder, lobster rolls, and crab cakes. Scarpetta Beach offered a more upscale scene, serving soulful Italian classics, in addition to seasonal and fresh seafood selections.

With 2 small dogs, I am always in need of pet friendly properties, when on the road. I loved that we could stay in such chic hotel, that tolerates fur friends. Our mornings started with walking the dogs along the beach, before breakfast. After we ate, it was usually swim suit time, for a romp in the heated indoor swimming pool. The coolest thing about the seawater pool is the water is drawn right from Montauk’s shores. Gemmie was able to stand on the shallow end without her swimmies, and the three kids played in the waters for hours. Some days, it was a chore just to get their wrinkled little bodies out for a break.

In addition to the pool, Gurney’s had some other activities to occupy the kids. One day we sat in on cookie decorating, and the next day the girls spent hours creating arts and crafts, along with some of the other little guests. While the girls were busy, Ryder played in the arcade room. With all this, we probably didn’t have to leave the property but we want to get to “the end” of the island, to see the Lighthouse. The scenery there, and all around Montauk is breathtaking, regardless of the season, we could have driven around for hours.

I mentioned my mom’s spa trips earlier, and the spa is one thing that Gurney’s is known for. With three kids running around, a little relaxation was in order. I will say that I’ve experienced a number of massages and treatments, and I am thinking about arranging my own girls trip here with my mama friends, who need some long over due alone time.

As our stay drew to an end, the thought of leaving our beach front cottage was tough. We had such a lovely stay though, and just made us excited to come back in the summertime. What a perfect way to kick off our new year!

Thank you Gurney’s Montauk Resort and Seawater Spa for an incredible stay and accommodations!

  2. It really does look like an awesome place to unwind after the hustle and bustle of the holiday season. I’d love to go during the slow months too, so we could feel like the place was entirely ours!

Wouldn’t this place be a lovely destination for a getaway? I love everything I see, and I think it looks secluded for a good reason as well.
