Teddy & Penny’s Purpose

This post is in partnership with the new film A Dog’s Purpose. Thank you for supporting SITC.

I am a firm believer that things happen for a reason. There’s a reason behind everything we do, and I truly believe that my first pet, Teddy, came into my live to bring love and comfort to a young twenty year old, braving her first years of living in Manhattan. My days were overloaded with work and school, and my little pal was always by my side. He spent weekends in our share houses in the Hamptons, and have been around for adulthood and even motherhood. His little sister, Penny Lane, my maltese, came into my life two years after Teddy. At first, the two were not huge fans of one another, but now they are the best of friends, and the absolute best pups to Ryder, Siella, and Gemma.

I mention it all the time, but before kids my puppies were everything. When I owned my showroom, they spent everyday with me in the office. Then, when I had Ryder, I was so emotional about being a new mom, but I was worried that Teddy and Penny would be upset by the introduction of our new addition to the household. From early on, I made it a point to have them come on every walk outside with the stroller, to give them some sense of normalcy, or the new normalcy. And then normal changed again, and again, when we welcomed Siella and Gemma.

Needless to say, the kids love the dogs, and they love movies about dogs. On January 27th, the new movie, A Dog’s Purpose opens, sharing the soulful and surprising story of one devoted dog (voiced by Josh Gad) who finds the meaning of his own existence through the lives of the humans he teaches to laugh and love. The family film, based on the beloved bestselling novel by W. Bruce Cameron, is told from the dog’s perspective. Dennis Quaid, Peggy Lipton, Britt Robertson, K.J. Aha, Juliet Rylance, Luke Kirby, John Ortiz and Pooch Hall round out the rest of the cast. The trailer of the film alone left me in tears, because it made me think of our pups, now at 12 and 14 years old, who are getting up their in their age. I am not sure what I would do without them, considering what a big part of our lives they are.

Having been there since all three children were born, it’s wonderful to see how my two playful pups have now turned into little protectors. They all share such a unique bond. To celebrate your dog’s purpose, recreate your own movie poster, just like I did above with our sweet Penny & Teddy. Once you’re done, share using #MyDogsPurpose and your dog could be featured in the film’s campaign!

The story reminds us to take a step back and celebrate our lives and time together. Recently, the 5 of us and the dogs did just that while taking a trip to the beach over the holidays. The dog and kids ran along the sandy beach for hours.

The movie is a sweet tale, and I hope it may inspire those of you without fur family members to go out and adopt one of your own. “The ones we rescue, rescue us.” ~ A Dog’s Purpose

Watch the trailer below and save the date to see it in theaters on January 27.

  1. I am so excited to see this movie. It looks like it’s going to be one of those that makes your heart just burst. I think I’m going to have to bring an entire box of tissues to the theater.

  2. Your dogs are really cute! You just cannot beat the companionship that a dog brings into your life. There is nothing like them. They are loyal and loving all the time. I love my two little fur babies, and I always will.

A Dog’s Purpose sounds like an emotional movie. We have three rescue dogs and they are so sweet. They are really our family. Your dogs are super cute.

  4. I definitely feel every dog has a purpose and always enjoy hearing about how loved and cherished they are. Teddy and Penny are both very lucky to have you all.

  5. I just am not sure if I have the gumption to watch this movie. I love the concept I just don’t know if I want to cry that much haha! I KNOW it will be a tearful movie for me. It’s a topic very close to my heart.

  7. So cute. I too, believe every dog has its purpose. Mine came to me to make my life 1000x better and they’ve done it. I couldn’t imagine life without them. I CANT wait to see a dogs purpose although I have a feeling there will be tons of tears shed by me!

  8. I loved reading this story! Your pups become such a huge part of your life and they go through so many stages and milestones with you. I cant wait to adopt a dog when my kids are a little older and the time is right. I know they will make a great addition to the family.
