Sailing On The Hudson

A few weeks back, Ryder and I took sailing lessons on the Hudson. This has been something I’ve been dying to do with him, and I can’t believe it’s taken us this long to do so. His birthday was the following day, so the timing couldn’t have been more ideal.

North Cove Sailing is located next to our apartment in South Battery Park, offering the best location for sailing in Manhattan, with beautiful sites like the Statue of Liberty and the NYC skyline that can only be seen at sea! The view was so amazing, I couldn’t stop taking photos. They host a variety of sailing programs for kids ages 7-17, from STEM courses to junior racing series! Kids can learn to sail for the first time, or further their existing skills to become a future skipper.

Neither Ryder nor I had sailed previously, so our instructor gave us an extensive course on first time sailing while we were on the water, and then let us learn hands on immediately. Ryder was in charge of steering the vessel, which was the coolest thing ever for him; and I was in charge of opening and closing the front sail, along with other guest sailors on our boat!

Our sailing lesson lasted for about an hour, but it’s definitely something Ryder wants to pursue, as he hasn’t stopped talking about it. I think it would be amazing for him to learn to sail at such a young age, and with lessons available right after school, its the ultimate after school activity. He’s such a nature boy, and this is totally up his alley!

  1. I have never sailed before. I have done almost every other kind of boat imaginable but never sailing. I would love to do that it looks like you guys had such a good time. What a great way to have some family time.

  2. I would love to take sailing lessons. It looks like it was a lot of fun. These are great memories you will always cherish.

  3. Sailing lessons is number 4 on my bucket list. I love to be out on the water with the wind in my hair. This would be such a fun bonding experience to do with my Son.

  4. Now this is a family outing that is totally up my alley! I love this! You all looked like you had such a good time – looks like such great adventure (and so refreshing, too)!

  5. This is something I would have never expected to see in NYC! It sounds so awesome! I hope he gets to pursue his passion of learning to sail!

  6. My husband was an avid sailor – in fact he felt our wedding money was best spent on a sailboat, but that is another story. He was happiest at sea but I threw up at sea. It was not a good combination. It looks like you and your family had a wonderful time. The scenery brought back a lot of memories for me so thank you for that.

  7. So idyllic!! I’m putting this one in my back pocket for when we take the kids to NYC! I’ve never seen the city from the water like this and I think the Hudson is as much a tourist destination as the city itself!
