Celebrating Cinco de Mayo

This is a sponsored post. Thank you for supporting SITC.

Just the other day, the kids and I were having a conversation about their favorite months, and we all agreed that May takes the cake. With the weather having taken a turn for the best, the sun has been abundant, and there is lots of fun stuff on the horizon. For the kids, school will start to wind down soon as they starting counting the days until summer vacay. And lets not forget one of my favorite holidays; Cinco de Mayo!

Celebrating Cinco de Mayo

Cinco de Mayo to many of us is all about celebrating Mexican heritage, but unbeknownst to some, its most important premise is celebrating the Mexican Army’s unlikely victory over French forces, at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. So keep that in mind when tipping back your margaritas on Friday. Frozen drinks aside, if there’s one type of food that our entire family always agrees on, it’s Mexican. Some of their weekly favorites include enchiladas, tacos, and different versions of fajitas.

Every year when Cinco de Mayo rolls around, I usually cook the kids their favorite dishes, while Jason and I indulge in a margarita or two. This year, I thought it would be fun for the kids to have a Cinco de Mayo playdate with some of their friends.

Rather than cooking, I decided to give myself a break, and have our little fiesta catered by one of the places we eat at often, Moe’s Southwest Grill. Ryder, Siella, and Gemma love it there because their kids meals are just the right size, and they can each order their own individualized meals. To my surprise, they offer a catering menu, which was perfect for our party!

After culling through the many options, I figured the kids would get a kick out of the Make Your Own Fajita Bar. Moe’s Fajita Bar come with soft flour tortillas, choice of protein, rice, pinto or black beans, mixed onions and peppers, shredded cheese, lettuce, sour cream, guacamole, pico de gallo and chips and salsa. I added a few more options to our order like queso, chips and salsa, margarita mix, and some cookies for dessert. There were some other selections, like Salad Bar, Taco Bar, and pre-made Burritos, but I figured this was plenty for our army of little people!

The kids and I stopped by a local party store to pick up some things to decorate our house. I left the decor to them, and they found some tiny sombreros, a piñata, red and green streamers, and a festive tablecloth! Decorating was half the fun! On the day of our party, I picked up our order about two hours before our guests arrived. Everything was already prepared in serving dishes, so doling it out was going to be a breeze.

Moe’s sells a liquid margarita mix by the gallon, which mixes easily with some tequila and ice. I even made some non-alcoholic options for the kiddies too!

Once our guests arrived, I told the kids they could all dig in! Each made their own plate, choosing their favorite toppings. They loved that they could build their own fajitas. Some their friends are picky eaters, but the fun of making their own wrap ups had them coming back for seconds, even thirds!

Our Cinco de Mayo party was a huge success! Siella asked me if we can host another party on the actual day, which I might have to do! If you are looking for something fun to do on Cinco de Mayo, definitely check out Moe’s Catering. Happy Cinco de Mayo!

  2. It does look like a huge success. The little sombreros are cute too. And I love the way you hung your photo diagonal on the wall (in the last picture!).

  3. What a fun way to celebrate and I love the food and decor ideas and the fact that the kids can enjoy the event too not just adults.

I agree with you that ordering from a restaurant the family enjoys will be a good option for a small party. I am happy you found that your favorite Mexican restaurant has catering service. Looks like your girls enjoyed their meal!
