Best Of Lake George + Video

Lake George has been high on my list of family getaways for years, and finally a few summers ago, our family made it up there! The drive is about four hours from New York City and while it may seem long, we were pleasantly distracted by the beautiful views of farms and scenery along the way. If you’re looking for a Labor Day Weekend getaway, this is a beautiful one!

Hotel

We stayed at the Sagamore Hotel in Bolting Landing, and I have to say from the minute we pulled into the grand entry, we knew it was a special place. This landmark hotel is secluded on a private 70-acre island, offering lots of family friendly activities! And once we dropped our bags, the kids didn’t waste anytime jumping in the pool!

Next, it was onto the lake! Lake George is massive, so massive that it almost feels like the ocean. Well, an ocean except according to Gemma it doesnt burn your eyes, and it tastes like “regular water.” The kids swam in the roped off areas of the lake, and floated in tubes. The water was crystal blue and the mountain scenery outlining the lake felt surreal.

Activities

The Sagamore offers fishing poles and bait so guests can fish right off their docks. This was cool, because it was the first time the girls had actually fished. They loved it, and caught tons of fish, which we of course put back into the lake. My little city kids getting in touch with nature!

The following day. we set out to explore the town. In Lake George Village, we took a ride on the Minni Ha Ha Steamboat Cruise. Riding on a steamboat was another first for all of us. The kids thought it was the coolest thing ever, and from where we were sitting, we could actually feel the steam shooting out of the stack! This year, the Minne-Ha-Ha entered her forty-eighth consecutive year in service, offering one-hour cruises, fully narrated by a staff member, as we hugged the lake’s shoreline.

The views on the Minni Ha Ha Steamboat of the lake were just breathtaking.

Across the road from the Steamboat Cruise dock was the super historic Fort William Henry Museum. In 1755, Fort William Henry was constructed to command the southern end of Lake George. It was a British outpost to protect the colonies farther to the south, serving as a launching site against the French held northern end of the lake protected by Fort Carillon.

The kids picked up a little history lesson while browsing in the gift shop!

We made it back to the Sagamore just in time for the sunset! Sunsets are totally my thing. They are such a gift from nature, and I truly look forward to each and everyone. I’m happy that my children are now appreciating them just as much as I do!

We made some s’mores around a camp fire set too. Definitely one of our favorite summertime activities!

The following day, we headed to Tubby Tubes, which might have been the highlight of our Lake George Trip! Jason and I really didn’t know what to expect, but have to say, tubing down the Lower Hudson River was such a cool experience, and a great way to experience the Adirondacks!

I really don’t think I’ve ever heard my children giggle as much as they didn’t during this tour!

The tour guides at Tubby Tubes were not only funny but super informative, offering insight into tubing and the spectacular nature surrounding us during the tour.

Plenty of friends told us that we couldn’t go to Lake George without stopping at Martha’s Dandee Crème.  A landmark for over 50 years, Martha’s has been attracting long lines and big smiles because of its creamy assortment of soft serve flavors. I have to say it was definitely the best ice cream we’ve ever tasted, so make sure you stop here if you are visiting Lake George! I mean, take a look at this ice cream cone the guy in front of us bought. I’m happy to report he ate the entire thing!

    1. No need to go off-site from the sagamore! Rec room and the Morgan boat and daily ice creams and smores and 3 pools and daily history tour by Randy is enough!

  1. The place looks absolutely spectacular. I have never even heard of this lake, but I think I need to add it to my travel list. I love exploring any place that has water and this has both a pool and the lake it’s perfect. It looks like you guys had so much fun.

  2. I really enjoyed following along on your adventures in Lake George on social media. My husband and I Have talked about going for years, one day I hope we will!

  6. I was born and raised in Lake George. Even as a resident, there’s always something to do. We had an advantage of being there, year round, and knowing what we could do and where. I would always recommend going there, to appreciate the lake and its natural beauty.
